In conjunction with the Curry School of Education Gifted Education Department, the Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is seeking instructors to fill Morning Teacher positions. This position involves curriculum planning, two professional development sessions, orientation sessions, and six weeks (3 two-week sessions) of teaching gifted students. Summer classes will be June 16 through July 25.

Morning classes are held 8:30–11:30 a.m. (for grades 5-6 and 7-8) OR 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (for grades 9-11). Afternoon sessions are held 1:30-3:30 p.m. (grades 9-11) OR 2:30-4:00 p.m. (grades 5-6 and 7-8).

Teachers will have responsibility for planning and implementing the curriculum as well as sharing their experiences, techniques, and strategies used by them as a teacher of the gifted. Salary is $4,000-4,400 for morning classes, $2,600-2,800 for afternoon 9-11 classes, and $2,000-2,200 for afternoon 5-6 and 7-8 classes. Specific responsibilities of teachers include the following:

1. Have a passion for connecting with young learners and growing in your own teaching practice!

2. Attend at least one Professional Development session during the spring semester, TBA

3. Develop a curriculum which is appropriately designed to challenge various levels of gifted learners. Submit plans for a nine-day unit.

4. Develop a parent letter related to your course.

5. Consult with the Director and/or Curriculum Supervisor regarding curricular questions on an “as needed” basis.

6. Attend SEP Orientation on June 13-14, 2019. You will also use the week of June 10 to set-up your classroom, organize materials, etc. as you need.

7. Teach classes every day at St. Anne’s Belfield for six weeks (3 two-week sessions; Monday-Friday the first week and Monday-Thursday the second week of each session). Teachers report to their classrooms no later than 30 minutes before the class is scheduled to begin.

8. Complete a student report for families by the second Friday of each session.

9. Collaborate professionally with SEP staff, students, and counselors.

• SEP seeks classes that are not found in the “regular” education coursework. If you wish to teach a more traditional topic (culture classes, astronomy, etc.), find a twist or a new lens for engaging high ability learners with this topic!

• Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics classes are always in high demand! Could you integrate any of these areas into your course at some point?

• SEP values active and authentic learning! Our curriculum focuses less on “content coverage” and more on depth and engaging these learners with key ideas and principles from various disciplines and fields.

• NOTE: This is only a proposal. We just want to find out about your initial ideas – full curriculum development will come later.

Phreaky Physics! A Look at the Cosmic Puzzle

Physics is a wonderful, exciting, and kooky field that asks how and why everything is the way it is. What are the building blocks of the universe? Can we go backwards in time? What keeps the sun burning? Are there other “us”es in other dimensions? What goes on in a black hole?! If you have ever wondered about how the world works, then congratulations—you're an aspiring physicist!

In this course, students will transform into scientists and engineers to discover how the world works and explore many of the questions that we still don't have answers to. As a scientist, you will come to see the world in the same curious way that many other scientists (such as Einstein and Newton) saw it. You will take part in many of the same activities and methods that these scientists used to discover the world around them, coming up with new and awesome ideas and designing your own unique ways to test these ideas. The best thing is that no previous experience in physics is required! Topics covered may include the nature of light, electricity and magnetism, cosmology, relativity, quantum physics, and modern mysteries of physics. Of course, as scientists, this may change depending on where our creativity and curiosity takes us!
