As an unschooler, [child’s name] plans to use his entire life as a learning environment, and he therefore plans to unschool year-round. As per New York State regulations and requirements, and in addition to foreign language studies, he will cover a full year’s worth of the following subjects: Math; Reading; Spelling; Writing English; Geography; U.S. History, Patriotism, Citizenship; Science and Health; Music; Visual Arts; and Physical Education.

Fifth Grade Math: through a variety of materials obtained from libraries, bookstores or created at home as needed. He also likes to do math online.

Reading, Spelling, Writing and English as Language Arts: through his interaction with language on a daily basis using books, people and the world around him.

Geography: through the use of the world around him, on trips and with maps.

U.S. History, Patriotism and Citizenship: through field trips, books and activities. He is particularly interested in the Constitution and will be working to further his knowledge through research, reading, discussions with knowledgeable persons and trips to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and trips to Washington, D.C.

Science and Health: through membership in the Inwood Astronomy Club and as a participant in Coyote Tracks classes sponsored by Children of the Earth Foundation. He will be learning to use the scientific method and scientific inquiry. He will utilize observations, classes, texts, dvds, online sites, kitchen activities and the natural world. He will gain further knowledge through discussion and experimentation about nutrition, disease, hygiene, the body and its functions.

Music: by learning songs from the Jewish liturgy and participating in

Hebrew classes and attending services. He will also attend secular concerts, recitals and listen to music. He also studies electric guitar with a private teacher.

Visual Arts: by attending theatrical productions and museums and doing his own studio art either in weekly classes or on his own, he will further his understanding and expand his appreciation of this field.

Physical Education will consist of recess daily, weather permitting, as well as seasonal sports and various other physical activities like hiking or biking.

[Child’s name] will review health precautions and disease control, including AIDS

AWARENESS, ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, DRUG ABUSE and preventative health care practices, including dental care and hygiene. Materials will be obtained from libraries and medical offices as needed.

In addition to the subjects listed above, [child’s name] will continue his

training in HIGHWAY SAFETY, TRAFFIC REGULATIONS, BICYCLE SAFETY, FIRE & ARSON PREVENTION and SAFETY and WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF EMERGENCY.

[child’s name] will attend the substantial equivalent of 180 days/900 hours.

Quarterly reports will be submitted on or around the following dates:

First Quarterly Report: November 15th 2013

Second Quarterly Report: January 31st, 2014

Third Quarterly Report: April 15th, 2014

Fourth Quarterly Report: June 30th, 2014

Instruction will be provided by his parents and/or by teachers, counselors and other people his parents deem appropriate.
