On-line Job Opportunities

Self Directed Online Search

Some companies choose to post summer jobs for students exclusively through their web sites for the sake of efficiency and/or to track applicants via their applicant tracking systems (ATS).

To help, the co-op office has prepared the following list of company web sites. This list is not comprehensive and is updated on an annual or semi-annual basis so it may not be current.

On some ATS' you can also create alerts which will notify you by e-mail of any jobs that are posted that meet the criteria (your qualifications and skills) you have listed in your profile.

When searching company sites, jobs that might meet the co-op requirements could be listed as "co-op", "intern", or "summer student" to name some of the more commonly used terms. Whatever the company calls them, just so long as they're relevant to your studies; are paid positions; are full time hours (more than 35 hrs/week); and are 12 - 16 or more consecutive weeks of work; then they can be used for a co-op credit.

Before accepting these or any other jobs you source on your own, make sure they can be used for a co-op credit by checking with your Faculty Advisor or the Co-op Office. You'll also need to complete a Job Eligibility Form which can be found at the Online Forms & Information section of the home page of your PlacePro account.

Keep your Co-op Coordinator (see names at the end of this document) informed of your personal job search activities and definitely tell him/her if you've been contacted for an interview or given a job offer.

Because these applications are a self-directed search, the Co-op Office will not be involved in the interview scheduling process, etc. You will be communicating with the company directly. Of course we are available to offer you any advice or resources as you go through the process.

Tips for On-line Applications

1. Complete all sections of the application/profile as fully as possible. Blank or unfilled portions of a profile will lower the "ranking" or "score" of your application for a potential job.

2. As you learn more things over the course of a term/year you should update your profile, particularly for companies in which you have a keen interest.

3. When completing your profile/application, compose your text using Microsoft Word or another processor so that you can catch spelling and grammar mistakes, then copy and paste the text into the application/profile.

4. Make sure the e-mail address you have in the ATS has plenty of space or is dedicated specifically for monitoring your online applications.

5. Make sure that you either save or print a copy of the posting/job description from the web site. If you're called for an interview later, you may not be able to go back and view the original posting if it's been taken down. This has happened to students in the past. In addition to an online job search, you can also explore the online networking resources that exist. Ten Thousand Coffees, , is a great online resource to connect with professionals across various industries. Create a profile and request to network with professionals who have registered on the site. Networking opportunities can take place as coffee chats, skype conversations, or email exchange. Thousand Coffees has an extensive FAQ section to answer any questions you may have about the site and how the service works.
