The library system

The library system

By Claudia Esperanza B.G.

The library system in Colombia is different in many aspects in relation with the library system here in Canada. In Colombia, one big difference is that you usually find only one library in each city.  Also, usually you don't have direct access to resources. If you need a book you have to find the book, browse through some reference cards in alphabetic order and show the reference to the librarian to get it or ask the librarian what kind of information you need. You don't have the opportunity in all the libraries to go and pick up a book by yourself.  Only in some libraries, you may be allowed to do so.

In Colombia the library is a place only for study and it doesn't have many resources.  Usually, if you need some information you have to take copies because sometimes they don't lend the books, they are for reference only.  Moreover, the library is not a place to enjoy with your kids, you have to be quiet and be very respectful in the library. Most of the children can't pick up their books and read it at the library.

Additionally, the government doesn't spend a lot of money and I do not remember any other program that the libraries in Colombia offer. On the other hand, in Canada you can find more than one library in each city and you have direct access to its resources.  In addition, the libraries are a good place to do many activities.  All the families can use this facility to enjoy because the government spends money and time providing us with good programs and a variety of resources.
