On day 1:

• You must complete enrolment in person at UCL (you should already have completed pre-enrolment online before the start of term): you will need your offer letter, proof of ID, and any documents requested by Admissions (such as degree transcripts).

• You will register for a UCL email account and collect your UCL ID – after enrolment.

• You will meet the Research Student Administrator for an induction into the department.

During Induction Week:

• You will meet the PhD Graduate Tutor, Anthony Hunter, who will give an introduction to the programme, supervision arrangements, progression monitoring, and other important related items (you will be sent handouts from this talk, if you haven’t started in September.

• You will meet the department’s Facilities Manager, JJ Giwa, who will give you your desk details and keys to the department offices and run through facilities matters (desk policy, open-plan office code of practice etc).

• You will meet the department’s Safety Officer, Dave Twisleton, who will give you a short safety induction to the department.

• You should set up a Computer Science account with the Technical Support Group (based on the 4th floor of the MPEB). You will be added to relevant mailing lists (for your research group, for all research students).

• You should meet with your primary supervisor.

• You should attend the Graduate School’s Welcome for Research Students (September and January only).

• You should attend the Central IT Services Induction (September only).

After 1 week

• You should have a desk by now; if you require equipment (laptop, desktop) you will need to make arrangements with your supervisor, the Graduate Tutor and the Technical Support Group.

• You should have had a meeting with your academic supervisors to discuss beginning your project.

• You should have started familiarising yourself the online research log.

• Check that all your details are correct on Portico (contact information, supervisor name, etc).

By 3 months

• By now you should have been allocated a secondary supervisor. Ask your primary supervisor to do this if it has not been arranged and to inform the Research Student Administrator the name of your secondary supervisor.

• You should be well on your way to developing your research project.

• You should have completed UCL’s online safety induction training.
