CHEMISTRY 12 COURSE OUTLINE

Chemistry 12 Course Outline 2016

Instructor: Mr. Iannone and Ms. Nera Web:

Chemistry is the study of connections between the everyday world and the molecular world. Chemists use atoms and molecules to explain properties and behaviors of matter.

“To think is to practice brain chemistry.”

“The highest levels of performance come to people who are centered, intuitive, creative, and reflective - people who know to see a problem as an opportunity.”

Each student will be given a workbook of assignments. After each lesson there will be an assignment to do from the workbook. You need to do the assignments and show your work in a neat presentable way using the methods that were taught to you. When you are finished, you go to the web site to evaluate your own work. Each item that is correct should be clearly checked with a red pen. Those which are incorrect should be corrected. When you write the test for the unit, the workbook will be collected and graded out of 20 marks. You need to really try to understand things in Chemistry 12. If you just memorize ways to get the right answer you might be successful for a while, however as time progresses and there is more and more to remember, you will not be successful. You need to do your own work. It does you no good to copy answers from your friends. It’s alright to get help from your friends, but in the end you will learn by doing the work yourself. You will have about 1 hour of homework each night, however if you take longer to learn, it could be longer. The workbook and the Moodle quizzes will prepare you for the tests that you will write each unit. There is homework after every class. If you leave it until the night before the test, you will not have time to do it adequately, and learn the chemistry properly so you retain it. You need to commit to the homework in the workbook and in the Moodle. I will collect your workbook periodically to monitor your progress. Your best mark from your Moodle quizzes will go into grade-book automatically and count for 20% of your grade. If you cannot commit to do the homework you should leave right now and find a different class that has less homework. Remember, if you are going into science, Universities are looking at your best to science marks. It’s time to kick it up a notch and do some quality work and get some good marks. Post Secondary education means a good job and higher pay. I wish you success in this class and I will do everything I can to ensure your success, but in the end, it can only be your commitment and hard work that will ensure your success. Have a great year.

Moodle Quizzes

To ensure that you are learning the material on a daily basis, there will be quizzes do online. You have 4 days to do them before they expire. You need to do these quizzes regularly in order to learn and understand the learning outcomes. If you are having trouble with the quizzes, get some help. You can do them in the room 215 and get help after school and at lunch; we have 15 computers that are connected to the internet.

Class Expectations:

1. Be ready for class. When the bell goes have your books open, a pen in your hand, paper and any other supplies you need out and ready to use. Often there is an activity for you do on the overhead projector screen. If you see it, begin the activity on your own, without me having to tell you.

2. Be on task and participate all period. If you put in a solid and consistent effort, I can guarantee you success in this course. When the teacher is talking you must listen! If you have something to say, put up your hand and wait for the teacher to acknowledge you.

3. Behave in a mature, co-operative and safe manner. If you behave in a way that is not safe, you will be asked to leave the lab.

4. You need to attend class regularly and be aware of task dates! All tests must be written on the scheduled day.

5. If the announcements come on at the end of the period, sit quietly and listen until the bell rings. Do not line up at the door waiting to leave. Good students often stay longer for extra help.

6. Be attentive in class by listening to all instructions and lessons.

7. Complete all your homework (Workbook and Moodle Quizzes) daily. Do not leave it for days and then try to do it!

8. If you can’t do the workbook questions or Moodle quizzes get some help before you fall behind! Come to my room and do the quizzes at lunch or after school- I will help you learn the chemistry. It’s all about learning and not so much getting the correct answers.

9. Do not write on our tables with anything including pencils!

10. Keep our classroom clean. No eating or drinking (except water). Return all equipment/technology to correct location and in good working order.
