FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – November 28, 2018

The Pennsylvania State University Agriculture Teacher Education Program Selected for National Award

SAN ANTONIO, Texas. – The Pennsylvania State University Agriculture Teacher Education Program in University Park, Pa., is one of only six programs nationwide that received the 2018 National Association of Agricultural Educators Outstanding Postsecondary Agriculture Program Award. The award was presented at the NAAE annual convention in San Antonio, Texas on November 28. The faculty are Dr. Daniel Foster, Dr. John Ewing, and Dr. Kevin Curry.

The vision of The Pennsylvania State University Agriculture Teacher Education Program is to develop digitally-literate, globally minded, 21st century positive agents of change for agricultural education. They develop agriscience teachers who are prepared to teach where learners are in need. This program works diligently to cultivate agricultural educators that are prepared to use effective pedagogical methods to successfully plan, implement, and assess agriscience instruction through the three component model of agricultural education. Their instruction is connected to pragmatic outcomes that are viewed with the goals of advancing both the development of the individual student as well as the furthering of the agricultural education professions mission: Agricultural education prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices in the global agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources systems.

The curriculum for The Pennsylvania State University Agriculture Teacher Education Program utilizes eight core courses to prepare teacher candidates for their future careers. While they are proud of their formal course work provided, it is their commitment to the value-added experiences that they believe makes up the “Penn State Advantage.” Students have many opportunities to network, gain hands-on experience, and professional development. For example, prior to graduation they have the opportunity to attend the National Association of Agricultural Educators Convention, the summer annual Pennsylvania Association of Agricultural Educators Meeting, as well as the National FFA Convention. At these events the students are able to attend educational workshops, serve as volunteers, work as an educator/chaperone, and gain an insight which will further their ability to be effective educators.

The Pennsylvania State Agriculture Education Program created the Global Teach Ag! initiative to provide an opportunity for like-minded individuals to come together to specifically address global learning opportunities for school-based agriculture. As a part of the effort, they worked with a team to create the Global Learning in Agriculture Conference. During this conference there were 12 on-demand presentations shared using VoiceThread, a technological platform. There were also four daily roundtable sessions addressing questions of global agriscience classrooms and a 4.5-hour online conference. They firmly believe in being a proactive voice for school-based agricultural education and the role and value of the agriculture teacher in helping students, schools, and communities across America experience success.

Each of the six regional Outstanding Postsecondary Agriculture Program Award winners was recognized at the NAAE convention in San Antonio, Texas. The Outstanding Postsecondary/Adult Program Award is sponsored by Bayer as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.

NAAE is the professional association for agricultural educators with over 8,000 members nationwide. Its mission is “professionals providing agricultural education for the global community through visionary leadership, advocacy and service.” The NAAE office is located in Lexington, Ky.
