Using the Holt Online Textbook
By: Arnica Breene
First of all the tour is a great place to start as soon as you log on. It will show you how to use many of the features that will be explained below.
1. Go to go.
2. Click on the link that says online textbook, it is on the bottom of the screen.
3. Log in with the user name and password your science teacher gave you (in your planner).
4. Select the textbook you will need to use from the list.
5. To begin, type in the page number or the use the dropdown menus (below) to select the chapter and section of the chapter you are studying.
6. Once you get to the correct page or chapter you will then see tabs that say book pages, reading help, visual concepts, etc.
7. From here you can read the chapter or select one of these tabs. To get to the next page or to go back a page, click the arrows that say next or previous. (You will find them near where you can enter page numbers, right below the tabs.)

BOOK PAGES
If you click on this tab it will take you to the regular online textbook.
READING HELP TAB
This is a great tool for students who have a difficult time understanding the text. I have found that it works best for specific pages of the chapter rather than the entire chapter or section.
1. Click on the book pages tab or select a page to review from the main screen (pictured above).
2. Once the page comes up, click on the reading help button on the side of the screen and a pop up box will appear. This is where the modified text will be located.
3. There are arrows on the top of the pop up screen (black area) that allow you to go to the next page of modified text.
4. There is also an area at the bottom of the pop up box to type in a vocabulary word to see a definition.
5. When you are done with this page, close out of it.
6. Use the next arrow on the main screen to go to the next page. Then repeat the steps by going to the reading help tab.
UNDER THE EACTITIVES TAB you will find the following tools:
VISUAL CONCEPTS
This section is made up presentations that review the main ideas of a specific section of the text book. The pictures are very clear and not as distracting as in the textbook pages. It is a great visual tool for learning and reviewing the text. It is also a great study review for tests or quizzes.
1. Select a section or an entire chapter to review from the main screen.
2. Once it comes up, click on the visual concepts tab and a new screen will appear.
3. Click on one of the topics that appear in blue and begin reading and learning!
4. When you are done with this page, close out of it. This will bring you back to the list to select another topic.
5. Once you are finished you can click on one of the tabs to continue viewing the rest of the chapter.

ACTIVITIES AND QUIZZES
Again, this is a great for reviewing chapters or sections in the book after reading or for studying. This tab has many different things you can do, including concept maps, interactive science tutor, and quizzes.
1. To begin, choose a chapter from the drop down menu on the main page. And choose entire chapter on the drop down box next to it. Then click on the activities and quizzes tab.
2. This will give you list of all of the activities for that chapter. (See picture below)
3. From here you need to choose what you would like to do. The quizzes will correct the answers as you go and offer explanations if you choose the incorrect answer.
4. The interactive science tutor allows you answer questions and then reads aloud to you an explanation with great visuals to go along with it. Simply click the bottom left arrow to have the tutor read and then click next on the bottom right to go to the next question.
5. When you are done with this page, close out of it. This will bring you back to the list to select another topic.
6. Once you are finished you can click on one of the tabs to continue viewing the rest of the chapter.
