La Sierra University's state--approved single subject teacher education program prepares candidates to teach in middle and high schools with a preliminary teaching credential from the State of California.

The preliminary credential is valid for 5 years, during which time the individual should work toward completing the professional clear credential.

Single subject candidates must complete a bachelor's degree with a major in at least one discipline in undergraduate studies. The teacher education program (TEP) can be complementary and simultaneously completed during undergraduate studies, or the TEP may be completed after graduation from the bachelor's program.

After completing requirements for the preliminary teaching credential and becoming hired for full--time classroom teaching, an individual may choose a subsequent program of study offering coursework and mentorship for the professional clear credential.

In La Sierra University's teacher education program, all preliminary credential candidates, whether preparing for state or SDA credentials, are expected to complete all state requirements for teacher education.

Those individuals desiring SDA credentials must complete additional coursework as required by the North American Division of Seventh--day Adventists. Many of these candidates also choose to complete the state's clear credential requirements through La Sierra University's Curriculum and Instruction department.
