1. CUNY + is the online catalog of the entire CUNY library system. It tells you what books, journals, videos & musical scores are available

Search Strategies:

• Go to the Library’s website at

Locating Books in the Library

• Use the Call Number Floor Guide to determine where your book is located.

• Match the 1st letter with the call number of the appropriate floor.

• Need more books on your subject? Books are grouped on shelves according to topic, so try browsing nearby titles.

• If you don’t find the book you need, try searching all CUNY libraries through the CLICS system. See handout for information.

Other Catalogs: LEO and CATNYP

If your book is not any CUNY library, you can always check the New York Public Library. LEO is the catalog for the branch libraries. CATNYP is the catalog for the New York Public Library’s research branch.

[pic] Finding Articles

1. Click on Electronic Databases to search a wealth of databases indexing published articles. Below is a selected list of e-resources to use for your research.

2. Some of the databases include the full-text of the articles. If you don’t see an indication of full-text click on the [pic] option to locate a journal article electronically or print. If you are not successful try searching Find Electronic Journals by Title and/or the Find Books & Journal Titles in the Catalog from the library homepage. See handout on finding journals for more information.

3. You can access these databases off-campus (at home). You must first register your ID card at the Circulation Desk (1st floor). Once registered, select the database you wish to search, you will be prompted to type in your library number located on the front of your ID card.

Other Helpful Databases:

Academic Search Premier- Provides full text for nearly 3,180 scholarly publications covering academic areas of study including social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies. 

Cares Database- A compilation of detailed information on over 2,469 agencies, 15,050 programs and 7,042 location sites.  Search for agencies using categories such as Program Type, Target Group, Borough, Zip Code, and Language.

Child Abuse and Neglect Index- Child Abuse, Child Welfare & Adoption - U.S. National Clearinghouse for Child Abuse and Neglect Information & U.S. National Adoption Information Clearinghouse.

Child Welfare Information Gateway- A service of the Children's Bureau, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which provides access to print and electronic publications, websites, and online databases covering a wide range of topics.

International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences- The Encyclopedia is the first attempt in a generation to map the social and behavioral sciences on a grand scale. It is the largest reference work ever published for the social and behavioral sciences and the first to appear in both print and electronic formats.

JSTOR- The Arts & Sciences Collections I, II, III, IV, and the Arts & Sciences Complement comprising titles from the following disciplines: African-American Studies, Anthropology, Asian Studies, Ecology, Economics, Education, Finance, History, Literature, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science, Population/Demography, Sociology, and Statistics.

Lexis-Nexis- Provides access to a wide range of news, business, legal, and reference information.see Academic Universe.

MasterFile Premier- Information on a broad range of topics including general interest, business, health and multi-cultural. Includes searchable full text for nearly 1,860 journals, including Consumer Reports and Business Week with full text dating as far back as January 1990. 

PsycInfo- Provides indexing and abstracts for over one million articles in 1,500 journals from over 50 countries. This database, provided by the American Psychological Association, also includes abstracts for dissertations, books and book chapters ranging in date from 1887 to the present.
