BeaubienPrincipal: Mr. D. ColeCOURSE DESCRIPTIONThis course enables students to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts related to introductory algebra, proportional reasoning, and measurement and geometry through investigation, the effective use of technology, and hands-on activities. Students will investigate real-life examples to develop various representations of linear relations, and will determine the connections between the representations. They will also explore certain relationships that emerge from the measurement of three-dimensional figures and two-dimensional shapes. Students will consolidate their mathematical skills as they solve problems and communicate their thinking.AREAS OF STUDYNumber Sense & Algebra solve problems involving proportional reasoning simplify numerical and polynomial expressions in one variable, and solve simple first-degree equationsLinear Relations apply data-management techniques to investigate relationships between two variables determine the characteristics of linear relations demonstrate an understanding of constant rate of change and its connection to linear relations connect various representations of a linear relation, and solve problems using the representationsMeasurement and Geometry determine, through investigation, the optimal values of various measurements of rectangles solve problems involving the measurements of two-dimensional shapes and the volumes of three-dimensional shapes determine, through investigation facilitated by dynamic geometry software, geometric properties and relationships involving two-dimensional shapes, and apply the results to solving problemsUNITS OF STUDYUnit 1: Measurement (Chapter 1) Unit 2:Optimization (Chapter 2)Unit 3: Polynomials (Chapter 7) Unit 4:Solving Equations (Chapter 7 & handouts) Unit 5: Investigating Relationships (Chapter 5) Unit 6:Proportional Reasoning (Chapter 4)Unit 7: Linear Relations (Chapter 6) Unit 8: Relationships in Geometry (Chapter 3)ASSESSMENT, EVALUATION, and MARK BREAKDOWNTerm ReportFinal ReportKnowledge & Understanding 25%Thinking/Inquiring/Problem Solving 25%Communication 25%Application 25% 100%Term Work 70%EQAO Exam 15%Final Culminating 15% 100%Assessment tools include tests/quizzes, assignments, and rich assessment tasks.EQAO Provincial Testing will be written June 11th and 12th 2020. Cell phones are a major distraction and will not be used in this class.3. Class time is to be used effectively and students are expected to focus on the task at hand.4.When absent, students are responsible for obtaining class notes and completing the required homework for the missed lesson(s). 5. Complete all homework and assignments and adhere to the due dates.6.If you have trouble with any assigned work, it is your responsibility to get extra help either during class, MSIP periods or during lunch in room 95Respect yourself, respect others, respect the staff, and respect the school.INSTRUCTOR CONTACT INFORMATIONe-mail address: sandra.beaubien@ucdsb.on.ca School phone: (613) 258 - 3481 AGREEMENT – MFM 1P1I agree to the course expectations and will do my best to:Bring my materials to class each day Student initialsUse class time effectively each day Student initialsPut my cellphone away when my teacher asks me to Student initialsAsk questions during class or at lunch if I need help Student initialsComplete homework and assignments Student initialsShow respect to my classmates by not disrupting their learning Student initials____________________________________________________________________________________ Student Name Student Signature ................
