The following community events were discussed:ASP Open House/Family Dinner – Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 6:30 am to 8:00 pmMen’s Health Symposium/Prostate Cancer Awareness Event – Saturday, September 21, 2014 from 10am to 2pmEthics Training Seminar Series – October 1, 2014 through June 2015ASP Hispanic Heritage Celebration, Thursday, October 16, 2014 from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pmWomen’s Annual Cancer Event, Saturday, October 25, 2014 from 10am – 2pm Old Business:Board Member – Qunea Gordon provided the continued discussion on the cookbook:Mission: To raise funds uniting communities and supporting the purchase of playground equipment and monthly rental storage shed of $300.00 - 10x15 storage space. Additionally, promoting cultural diversity in the City of Hallandale Beach and possibility incorporating a festival. Friends of Hepburn will be the financial conduit for the cookbook project (all checks will be written to the Friends of Hepburn) and a check will be written from the Friends of Hepburn to Morris Cookbook for the order of cookbooks. Next meeting date: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Ordering of the books entails paying for a setup costs. Therefore, we want to order as many books to cut down on cost. Board member Jackie Pentecost would like to know the following information about the bank account:Where does the Friends the bank account resides?Where can a donor send money?Friends of Hepburn has $400.00 to start the Cookbook ProjectResearch the amount you can order without being penalized.Cookbook base prices link: is a Price Estimator that we can process during the next meeting. Link: ideas Research Friends of Hepburn Bank Account Information: Friends could finance the project. Friends of Hepburn will write the check for the publishing of the cook book. We have to investigate the name of the cook bookBoard Member Qunea Gordon submit possible cook book title : “Cooking Healthy with Elegance, Preparing for Our Families, Bountiful, Unique, Rich Desserts and Nutritious Meals” Delivery of the cook book will be at Hepburn Center due to the weight constraints of the books.Deadline for recipe submission for next year Christmas or next summer – enter the recipes on the website or use the recipe form. Portia will make copies of the recipes.Place name and phone number on the recipe form make sure it is legible.Contact information is essential so that we can follow-up with client for pre-sale orders.Chair Lisa Colmenares has contacted an artist Adam to design the cover.Insert pages can be a sponsor on the tabs as advertising - more discussion for next meeting. The board has to decide – How to design the book with insert that will sell as sponsorships.Qunea create letter to send to friends, family and community in support of the cook book.Board discussed marketing the book to various churches, community organizations, city staff, and reaching out to all the ethnic cultures for this historical cooking unity for the community.Promoting to all quadrants of the City.Victor indicated he could promote the Cookbook to (20) other Senior Centers throughout the Southern Broward. Requesting our Partners to get involved (Memorial Hospital, etc.)Attending the Commission Meeting and making an announcement about the project.Place the cook book initiative in the Hallandale Happenings – every (6) months publication.City Wide Cookbook FestivalOther Possible Project:Scrap book project - Qunea Gordon suggested documenting the success story in a scrap book format documenting the milestone and contribution of the Hepburn Center over the years. Jackie is assign to speak with Ms. Mary Washington to get the articles and pictures during her administration.Acting Director Cora Daise informed the board that staff is still capturing news article for the scrapbook. Make sure the scrapbook is placed on agenda for the upcoming meetingsBoard Member Linda Cox has volunteered to also visit Ms. Mary Washington to assist with sorting the documents.Board Member - Jackie Pentecost suggest creating a video marketing tool to showcase the various programs at the Hepburn Center.Acting Director Cora Daise informed the board that Peter Dobens, Public Relations and Information Officer produced a video with in preparation for the “Open House” EventBoard Member Jackie Pentecost suggested that we investigate Comcast Community Station“78” to assist with the creation of the video.New Business:Chair Lisa Colmenares will talk with Cora about increasing new members for the board. Board welcome new board member - Mariana BitereQuorum for the Austin Hepburn Center (5) board member presentChair Lisa Colmenares will be taken exam for Doctoral Degree during the week of October 8 -13, 2014. Please excuse her absence for meeting.Selection of the “DR.MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HUMANITARIAN AWARD”. The following individuals were nominated for the awardKenrife Morris (1) nomination – Everyday Ken arrive early 7:00 a.m. to help with the opening of the Hepburn Center on a volunteer basis. Ken’s key function-he rides the van every day to assist with the Seniors getting on and off the bus. Nominated by Board Member - Jackie PentecostJackie Pentecost (1) nomination – Board Member of the Human Services Advisory Board. Nomination is not eligible per Policy.Gerald Eddex (12) nominations. Volunteers with Paul Snow at the Hallandale Beach Food Pantry.Alma McCutchen (18) nominations – A Pioneer in the community, a native Hallandale resident, volunteers at the Hepburn Center in the Senior Community Choir and a breast cancer survivor. She mentors in the community and at Church through her music. Mansura Minhas (26) nominations – Volunteers at the Hepburn Center, packing meals for the USDA Food Distribution Program. She has made several financial contributions to the Hepburn Center. She also provides after school supplies for the children - Nominated by Jackie Pentecost.New Business:Selection of the “DR.MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HUMANITARIAN AWARD”. The following individuals were nominated for the awardKenrife Morris – Nominee #1Numbers of vote by Board Members: Jackie Pentecost and Dr. Judy SelzComments by Board Members: Jackie Pentecost – Votes for Ken Morris, he works so hard at the Center, he is here every day, unpaid volunteer and because of his work efforts you would think he was a salaried employee. He feels responsible at the center and sometime employees don’t have the same work efforts. He informs the staff when he will be out on sick.Dr. Judy Selz – Votes for Ken Morris because of his dedication, caring, empathy, and dependability of serving the Senior for over 20 years.Jackie Pentecost - Nominee #2 disqualified due to Board membership.Gerald Eddex – Nominee #3 Alma McCutchen - Nominee #4 Numbers of votes by Board Members: Qunea Gordon, Linda Cox, Mariana Bitere and Dr. Debra Brown. Comments by Board Members: Qunea Gordon – Votes for Alma McCutchen because of her pioneer status in Hallandale, very compassionate for others during their time of need, joyful person and touch many children lives in the community via her musical talents with piano and singing. She has made a difference in so many lives. She emulates all the characteristic of Martin Luther King, Jr. and she lives that daily. She is a breast cancer survivor and she was strong throughout the entire process. A role model for other survivors.Dr. Debra Brown – Votes for Alma McCutchen has been in Hallandale all her life (80+) years and that marks for a person to receive this level of award. She has given herself for so many years of service to this community, not to just the Hepburn Center but our humanitarian has to extend throughout the community and she has done that in counseling, teaching children music, and she is well deserving of the award. Mariana Bitere – Votes for Alma McCutchen , she doesn’t know her personally but by reading the application comments, she receives nominations from friends, neighbors, fellow worshipers, relatives, an auntie for someone, and everyone is writing wonderful things about her and she is spreading her gifts of music, particularly church music which touches her heart. She gives her time in music and people gather around music. I love what people wrote about Alma.Linda Cox - Votes for Alma McCutchen, she know her all her life, she is her Mom best friend, great person in the community, her Mother and Ms. McCutchen grew up together. She is a stand-up person, right is right and wrong is wrong. Her voice is still absolutely gorgeous even at her age, and she still sounds good. Mansura Minhas - Nominee #5 Lisa Colmenares – Votes for Mansura Minhas, by reading the nominations, she saw where people were proud of her work, she has a sense of pride in the community. She also saw where others thought she was a kind person, and she promoted team work. She feels those values are very important. She also exemplified dedication and very deserving of the award. Winner of 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award: Alma McCutchen New Business Continued: Nomination ResultsAlma McCutchen (4) votes, Kenrife Morris (2) votes, and Mansura Minhas (1) vote The Advisory Board is welcome to attend the Commission Meeting for announcement of the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award once the date is announced. The nominees will be invited to the Commission Meeting, once they approve the nomination. Announcements:Ethnic Training Seminar Series from the City Attorney Office starting on October 1, 2014 every month until June 2015. It is recommended that all Board Members attend the (1) hour training from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.Open House for After School Program Parents – September 18, 2014 Dinner will be served. Hepburn Center’s Men’s Annual Health Symposium schedule for September 20, 2014.Hepburn Center’s Women’s Health Symposium schedule for October 25, 2014.Stilletto Breast Cancer Walk, sponsored by Fire and Dezire Motorcycle Club – all proceeds from walk are giving to an organization or a person that may be battling cancer at the time.The Hispanic Heritage Celebration program both Seniors – 10:00 a.m. and After School Program (ASP) 3:00 p.m. will be held on October 16, 2014. Jackie Pentecost – Met with the current the City Manager is looking for a location to build a new building for the Hepburn Center because of the growth. Dixie Park Alumni – September 20, 2014 – Block Party informational session about the “Go Bond” initiative.
