Yours in education,Kristen SebekFrom our Assistant PrincipalIt is with great pleasure that I join the Weddington Elementary as the Assistant Principal. I am excited to be part of such a great community and look forward to the 2017-2018 school year. After graduating from East Carolina University with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary English Education, I began my educational career in my hometown of Sanford, NC as a high school English teacher. I transitioned to the Charlotte area three years later and continued to serve as an English teacher for ten years. I attended Wingate University where I received my Masters in Educational Leadership. My career path led me to Union County where I have served as a teacher and Assistant Principal. I currently reside in Monroe with my husband and three children and enjoy spending time with them. I am dedicated to the profession and I am a life time learner. I look forward to serving the students at Weddington Elementary and the community! Sincerely,Shannon LongFrom our Guidance CounselorHello Weddington Wildcat Community! I am so excited to begin the 2017-2018 school year as Weddington Elementary’s new School Counselor! After receiving my Bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology, I held different positions as an educator working with Pre-K through college students. I am a recent graduate of the University of Massachusetts Boston with a Masters in Education, focused specifically in the field of School Counseling. Currently, I live in Charlotte with my Fiancé and two dogs, Guapo and Ruby. I love to read, explore North Carolina, practice yoga, and go hiking!I am eager to put into practice everything I have learned and continue to offer Weddington Elementary a School Counseling program that supports, advocates for, and advances the academic goals, social– emotional learning, and career and college readiness for every student.Ms. Amanda Santos, Guidance CounselorWeddington Elementary 2017-2018 Open House and New Family Welcome!0-3810The Weddington Elementary 2017-2018 “Open House” will take place on Thursday, August 25th from 12:15 – 2:00 p.m. This is an opportunity for all students and families to drop in and meet his or her teacher for the 2017-2018 school year. Don’t forget to stop by the gymnasium where our Weddington PTO Spirit Wear Committee will be stationed with all of the fantastic Weddington spirit wear. Be sure to get yours! Is your child going to be an afternoon car rider? If so, be sure to stop by the cafeteria to obtain an official 2017-2018 “Weddington Elementary Car Rider” sign. Each parent/guardian who plans to pick up his/her child in the car pool line must present photo identification to receive the sign. There is a limit of two signs per family. As student safety continues to be our first priority, students will not be dismissed to an adult who does not display the 2017-2018 car rider sign. After August 25th, the official car rider signs will be available in the front office. We also have official “Weddington Student Walker” tags. Parents/guardians who wish to walk to school will need to secure a tag(s) as well. We can’t wait to see all families on August 25th!22741662480540New Family Welcome! We will be conducting a “New Family Welcome” on Friday, August 25th from 2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. in the Weddington Middle School gymnasium. This is an opportunity for our newly registered families to meet the Weddington administration and learn important policies and procedures regarding our wonderful school. AIG Information MeetingFollowing our New Family Welcome, there will be an information meeting for parents of all 4th and 5th Grade AIG students. The AIG meeting will be held in the Weddington Middle School gymnasium and will begin promptly at 2:40 p.m. Who is My Teacher? 3308754126711All Weddington teachers will receive their student rosters the week of August 21st. In the past, teachers have called every student on his/her roster. As our enrollment continues to increase and with changes in phone numbers, teachers had a difficult time reaching all families prior to Open House. We have changed the procedure for the 2017-2018 school year. Instead of making telephone calls, all class lists will be posted outside the school at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 25th, before Open House. This will eliminate any confusion for families who may not receive a telephone call. Posting the class lists will also ensure all families receive the teacher assignment information at the same time. In addition, with so many families registering up until Open House, it allows administration to adjust class lists accordingly. If you do not see your child’s name listed on a roster, please report to the “Student Roster” table at Open House. Should I bring my school supplies to Open House?Students are welcome to bring school supplies to Open House or on the first day of school. *If you ordered a school supply kit from the Weddington PTO, the kits will be delivered directly to your child’s classroom prior to Open House. Communication 3022600127000 Administration strongly believes in keeping parents informed of school activities and student progress. Every Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m., an email with the weekly updates will be sent to all parents. On special occasions and/or in the case of an emergency, telephone calls or text messages will be sent in lieu of an email. *Please note, you must sign up to receive the emails and telephone calls. You can contact our student Data Manager, Norma Felipe, at norma.felipe@ucps.k12.nc.us and sign up to receive the emails, telephone calls, and text messages. Weddington Student Handbook 965202794000All Weddington students will receive a Weddington Elementary Student Handbook the first week of school. The handbook has been revised for the 2017-2018 school year and contains pertinent information concerning our school policies and procedures. We ask for all students and families to read the handbook and refer to it as questions arise throughout the school year. We also ask for students and parent(s) to complete and sign the signature form. The signature page will confirm the handbook has been reviewed by the student and parent(s). The signature page is due to the teacher on Friday, September 8th. A Special Welcome To Our Youngest Wildcats!!We would like to extend a very special welcome to our 2017-2018 Kindergarten class! Please note, parents are permitted to walk students to class prior to September 11th. Monday, September 11th is our official “Weddington Independence Day” and all students will exit their vehicle in the carpool line and walk to class independently. We also ask that all parents of students in 1st – 5th grades refrain from coming to lunch prior to September 11th. Our teachers will be working hard to assimilate the students with their school and classroom procedures. All parents are welcome to join your child for lunch after September 11th. *Parents of Kindergarten students – we ask that you refrain from having lunch with your child until the end of the first grading period, October 10th. It is important for your young Wildcat to become acclimated with school and establish independence prior to parent visits. **An exception is made for any student who celebrates a birthday prior to September 11th. Please see your child’s teacher if this is the case. Thank you for your support of this important safety procedure.
