Deleting Files and Folders
There are times when you need to DELETE a folder or a file from your computer or from your Flash Drive. This can be accomplished using a variety of methods.
IMPORTANT:
1. Deleting a file or folder from your Flash Drive will delete it permanently. This means that you will NEVER be able to get it back.
Class Activity 1
1. Create two new folders on your Desktop.
2. Name the first folder My Vacation.
3. Name the second folder My Homework.
4. Open WordPad.
5. Create two new WordPad files.
6. Name the first WordPad file Spelling Homework and save the file to My Homework folder.
7. Name the second WordPad file Vacation Memories and save the file to My Vacation.
Steps to Delete a File or Folder
1. Locate the folders that you wish to delete.
2. Go to My Vacation folder located on your Desktop.
3. Right click and click Delete.
A box will appear asking you: “Are you sure you want to move this file to the Recycle Bin? Click OK. [pic]
4. Now locate the My Homework folder. Right click and click Delete.
Note – The item that you deleted has been sent to the Recycle Bin.
What is the Recycle Bin?
The Recycle Bin is the computer’s trash can. Just like you throw things away at your house, you can throw things away on your computer. It’s called the Recycle Bin because you have the choice of pulling the file or the folder back out of the computer’s trash can – just like you can at your house.
Restoring a Deleted File or Folder
A file or folder can be restored or pulled out of the Recycle Bin and returned to the original place from where it was originally deleted. This is a nice feature in case you changed your mind about deleting something.
IMPORTANT – YOU CANNOT RESTORE A FILE OR FOLDER IF IT WAS DELETED FROM YOUR FLASH DRIVE.
Steps to Restore a Deleted File or Folder
1. Go to your Desktop, locate and double click to OPEN the Recycle Bin. You should see two folders that you just deleted.
- My Homework
- My Vacation
2. Click to select the item that you want restored, and click on Restore This Item.
Note – the item will be removed from the Recycle Bin and returned back to the place from where it was deleted.
Continue to practice deleting and restoring other folders and files on your computer.
