Manufacturing and operations management produces the products or service that an organization provides to its customers. Careful planning and management of internal and external operations is required if an organization is to prosper, or indeed, to survive. While the course has a focus on management, a strong emphasis is also given on theoretical aspects and technical competence of analytical tools, as these are essential for superior problem solving.Course Objectives:The major objective of this course is to provide each student with a basic understanding of the manufacturing functions within the supply chain. The students will also be exposed to selected methods in controlling and planning production processes. In particular, at the end of this course, you should understand:The role of production and operations within a business, and within the larger economyThe major strategic choices companies face when choosing and implementing operations The importance of process control, planning and inventory managementThe practice of quality management and quality management tools in an organization A wide variety of analytical techniques used in production and operations managementText: Operations Management, 13/E, by Jay Heizer & Barry Render,?Prentice Hall 44672254826000There are 3 options that the bookstore can carry for you (Option 3 is the cheapest alternative):Operations Management: Sustainability and Supply Chain Management, Student Value Edition Plus MyOMLab with Pearson eText -- Access Card Package, 13th Edition by Jay Heizer, Barry Render, and Chuck Munson. Learning Modules: This course is designed using a modular format?that is, each week is packaged as a single module so that all materials are in one area for a given week. Please read the course schedule file for the detailed breakdown of all the modules covered in this course.Equipment Needs:Course content is delivered via the Internet through the Blackboard learning management system. Ensure your UTEP e-mail account is working and that you have access to the Web and a stable web browser. Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are the best browsers for Blackboard; other browsers may cause complications. When having technical difficulties, update your browser, clear your cache, or try switching to another browser. You will need to have access to a computer/laptop, scanner, a webcam, and a microphone. You will need to download or update the following software: Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Windows Media Player, QuickTime, and Java. Check that your computer hardware and software are up-to-date and able to access all parts of the course. For the best experience possible, be sure that your browser allows popups and cookies. Technical issues are not acceptable excuses for not turning in assignments! If you do not have a word-processing software, you can download Word and other Microsoft Office programs (including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and more) for free via UTEP’s Microsoft Office Portal. Click the following link for more information about Microsoft Office 365 and follow the instructions. IMPORTANT: If you encounter technical difficulties beyond your scope of troubleshooting, please contact the UTEP Help Desk as they are trained specifically in assisting with technological needs of students. Please do not contact me for this type of assistance. The Help Desk is much better equipped than I am to assist you!Course CommunicationBecause this is an online class, we won’t see each other in the ways you may be accustomed to: during class time, small group meetings, and office hours. However, there are a number of ways we can keep the communication channels open: Office Hours: We will not be able to meet on campus, but we will still have office hours by instructors or TAs for your questions and comments about the course. Our office hours will be held on Blackboard Collaborate or Zoom and tentatively, during the following times: By instructors: Thursdays & Fridays: 10 a.m. ~ 12 p.m. Mountain time()By TA: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays: 10 a.m. ~ 12 p.m. Mountain time ()Email: Send all e-mail messages through Blackboard only. Log on to the class on Blackboard and then click on the “Class e-mail” link on the left pane. Please do not simply reply to any announcements you receive about the course. Using the class email allows us to see your course number which will pop out from many other emails we receive every day. We will make every attempt to respond to your e-mail within 24-48 hours of receipt. Discussion Board: If you have a question that you believe other students may also have, please post it in the Help Board of the discussion boards inside of Blackboard. Please respond to other students’ questions if you have a helpful response. Announcements: Check the Blackboard announcements frequently for any updates, deadlines, or other important messages. Netiquette As we know, sometimes communication online can be challenging. It’s possible to miscommunicate what we mean or to misunderstand what our classmates mean given the lack of body language and immediate feedback. Therefore, please keep these netiquette (network etiquette) guidelines in mind. Failure to observe them may result in disciplinary action. Always consider audience. This is a college-level course; therefore, all communication should reflect polite consideration of other’s ideas. Respect and courtesy must be provided to classmates and to the instructor at all times. No harassment or inappropriate postings will be tolerated. When reacting to someone else’s message, address the ideas, not the person. Post only what anyone would comfortably state in a face-to-face situation. Blackboard is not a public internet venue; all postings to it should be considered private and confidential. Whatever is posted on in these online spaces is intended for classmates and professor only. Please do not copy documents and paste them to a publicly accessible website, blog, or other space. Course Website: Blackboard: The electronic platform for this course will be Blackboard. Students are responsible for checking Blackboard and your UTEP email daily for course announcements and updates through the my.utep.edu portal. Blackboard is the main source of communication between faculty and students. Students are encouraged to access this site daily. Course syllabus, calendar, slides, and videos are posted on this site. Grades will be made available ONLY through this site. Important announcements for this class will be send through “Blackboard announcement” and will go directly to your email. Please check your email every day for any communication. Exams are also conducted through Blackboard.MyOMLab: MyOMLab is required for this course as all homework assignments and simulations have to be done on MyOMLab. To purchase the access code you must use the link provided in “Textbook info” on Blackboard. Deadlines for assignments on MyOMlab will NOT be extended due to late purchase, so please obtain the access code no later than the end of week 2. Lectures: This is an online course in an asynchronous format. Important material from the textbook and some outside sources will be covered in class. YOU MUST READ IN ADVANCE THE MATERIAL TO BE COVERED IN CLASS. You should plan to take careful notes as not all material can be found in the text. You take full responsibility when you do not review the lecture session. Learning material is released on a weekly basis and will be available no later than Monday morning at 8 am in each week.Grading: Your final grade will be determined as follows:Grade AllocationFinal Grade TableExam 1 100 pts450 and aboveAExam 2 100 pts400~449BExam 3100 pts350~399CHomework Assignments 200 pts300~349DBelow 300FTotal500 ptsExams: All three exams are delivered online using the blackboard platform. You must take all three exams. For all exams, you will be asked to use the Respondus Lockdown Browser (RLB) and Monitor. There will be a mock test prior to the first exam to allow you to get the full experience of taking an exam using these tools. Prior to the mock, you will be asked to get your personal computer ready to take the exam by downloading and installing all necessary software. You are encouraged to learn more about how to use these programs prior to the first test. Please review the following guidelines: The assessments will only be available at the times identified on the course calendar. You may take the test at any time during the 48-hour window. A reliable Internet connection is essential to completing the exam. If you must go to a location to take the exam (such as the library), be sure to follow their health and safety requirements. Respondus Lockdown Browser will require that all internet tabs are closed prior to the start of the test. Respondus Monitor requires a webcam and microphone. You will be required to show the webcam your student ID prior to the start of the test. Your face should be completely visible during the test. Blocking the camera will disable the test. No notes or textbook materials are permitted during the test. Respondus Monitor requires you to take a video of your surrounding area (desk, chair, walls, etc.) You should not have conversations with other people and/or leave and return to the area during the test. A make-up exam may be possible with an approved, documented medical excuse. Notify the instructors before the exam if possible. Nonetheless, you must send the instructors a note from your physician (on official letterhead with the physician’s contact information) justifying your failure to complete an exam within one week of the date of the exam. You must provide official documentation from a physician in order to seek an excused absence from an exam. The instructors will review and verify this information and then consider a possible make-up exam. Make-up exams might be possible for compelling, unexpected, documented circumstances with an notice to the instructors prior to the scheduled exam. It is entirely up to the instructors to approve make-up exams. If you miss an exam and your instructors have accepted this as a justified, legit excuse, you will need to make up the exam at the earliest possible time. There is also an optional comprehensive final exam. You can only take the optional comprehensive final exam if you have taken or made-up exams 1~ 3. The comprehensive final exam is to replace the lowest score of your first three exams. If your final comprehensive exam score is lower than those of your first three exams, the comprehensive final exam will be dropped. No make-up comprehensive final exam will be offered. Missing any of the exams 1~3 will automatically lead your comprehensive final exam to zero even if you end up taking it during the scheduled time period. In other words, you cannot plan to miss an exam and plan to use the comprehensive final exam to replace the exam missed. Homework Assignments: Most homework assignments and simulation game have to be done in MyOMLab, and a few have to be submitted to Discussion board in Blackboard. These assignments are assigned after covering each chapter. All assignments are due on Sunday night by midnight MST (Mountain Standard Time). Please note the time zone and be sure to understand the implications for any other time zone. Homework cannot be made up after its due date. The grade for late assignments will be 0 (zero). Pleading your case and/or begging for mercy will not be tolerated. Each assignment is worth 10 points and there are over 20 assignments throughout the semester with. Any additional points earned beyond 200 will be counted as extra points towards your total grade. Additional tips for this online class: Just like face-to-face classes, online class success requires excellent time management skills. Read the syllabus carefully and note all assignments and their respective deadlines. Technology issues are not an excuse for late work. In fact, plan to complete all assignments as far ahead of the actual deadline as you can to avoid last-minute glitches and other issues. Develop good habits early and stick to them throughout the session. Deadlines are specified in the course schedule as well as in each assignment. It is critical to complete all assignments before the deadline. Late assignments will not be accepted for any reason. So, be sure to plan ahead! GENERAL INFORMATIONExcused Absences and/or Course Drop PolicyWe will not drop you from the course. However, if you feel that you are unable to complete the course successfully, please let me know and then contact the Registrar’s Office to initiate the drop process. If you do not, you are at risk of receiving an “F” for the course.Alternative Means of Submitting Work In Case Of Technical Issues We strongly suggest that you submit your work with plenty of time to spare in the event that you have a technical issue with the course website, network, and/or your computer. We also suggest you save all your work (answers to discussion points, quizzes, exams, and essays) in a separate Word document as a back-up. This way, you will have evidence that you completed the work and will not lose credit. If you are experiencing difficulties submitting your work through the course website, please contact the UTEP Help Desk. You can email me your back-up document as a last resort. Incomplete Grade Policy Incomplete grades may be requested only in exceptional circumstances after you have completed at least half of the course requirements. Talk to me immediately if you believe an incomplete is warranted.
