Oracle and Peoplesoft Development Status

Andrew Holdsworth Oracle Corp, Jerry Zarate Peoplesoft Inc

Introduction

For over a year now Oracle Server Technologies Development has invested directly in the Peoplesoft/Oracle product stack by allocation of Server Technologies development resources on site at Peoplesoft. This investment is to ensure the Oracle’s Peoplsoft users can adopt and take advantage of the most recent developments in Oracle database technology in their production Peoplsoft systems.

Most of this work requires considerable functional, regression and certification testing on multiple hardware/OS platforms to ensure that recent releases of Oracle are available to Peoplesoft Customers. Additional investment is made to improve the product stack by specific development projects or research into new database features and technologies. This work is incorporated into future releases of Peoplesoft and is often tested under load with various Peoplesoft Benchmarks.

By having on site Oracle engineers at Peoplsoft, Oracle have been able address issues earlier in the software lifecycle as well as educate Peoplesoft Staff on how best to utilizeOracle Database Technology.

Oracle/Peoplsoft Certification Status

As part of the investment in the Peoplsoft/Oracle stack we are able to be involved in the certification process. This ensures that bugs are caught early and can be resolved before production release of Oracle. Where logistically this is not possible we have been able to create Peoplesoft specific patch sets that make the support and certification process simpler and shorter. When Peoplesoft discovers any defects they are escalated directly to the development organization immediately without the need for support.

The current supported configurations of Peoplesoft/Oracle are as follows:

Oracle 9.2.0.2.x

Note that when using Oracle9iR2 the minimum releases/patches are as follows:

Oracle9iR2 requires

• 9.2.0.2.x Patch set + Patch# 2688717

For the IPF platform, these are the current supported/planned configurations of Peoplesoft/Oracle are as follows:

Oracle 9.2.0.2.x

Database Server Only, indicates PeopleSoft only supports this combination running the RDBMS, all other PeopleSoft components are supported running on other platforms.

Note that when using Oracle9iR2 the minimum releases/patches are as follows:

Oracle9iR2 requires

9.2.0.2.x Patch set + Patch# 2688717

There have been issues resolved with respect to the following topics

• Oracle8i to Oracle9i Upgrades

• Shared Libraries

• 32/64 Bit issues

• ASO issues

Considerable information on upgrade and port specific issues is available directly from the Peoplsoft Web Page at

www4.. Then drill down to Implement, Optimize + Upgrade/Implementation Guide/Supported Platforms/server/Supported Server Configuration/Peopletools Release /

Oracle 9.2.0.3.x

The current supported/planned configurations of Peoplesoft/Oracle are as follows:

The plan for HP-UX 11.23 on Itanium is to port the complete PeopleSoft stack with PT 8.44.

Oracle 9.2.0.4.0

The current supported/planned configurations of Peoplesoft/Oracle are as follows:

The plan for HP-UX 11.23 on Itanium is to port the complete PeopleSoft stach with PT 8.44.

Oracle/Peoplsoft Technology Adoption

In addition to certifications of Oracle9i for Peoplesoft additional projects are in progress to allow adoption of additional Oracle features.

• Index Organized Tables

• Index-skip scan

• Temporary datafiles for temp tablespaces,

• Multiple block sizes in buffer cache,

• Migration from Longs to LOBS in OCI,

• Literal replacement: CURSOR_SHARING=FORSE/SIMILAR,

• TIMESTAMP datatype,

• Migrating stats using dbms_stats package (export/import/setting).

Real Application Clusters

There has been considerable customer interest in the adoption of RAC technology for PeopleSoft applications.

The user motivation for RAC technology has been for high availability and increased scalability.

PeopleSoft and Oracle have been working together for over 1.5 years to get achieve certification wih RAC.

PeopleSoft has certified RAC

The following PeopleSoft releases and platform combinations are supported

Peoplesoft 8 - PT8.42 and PT8.43 with Oracle 9.2.0.2.x and 9.2.0.3.x on the following platforms:

HPUX11i

HP Tru 64 5.1

Sun Solaris 7 and 8

AIX 4.3 and 5.1 (5.2 Q42003/Q12004)

Windows 2000

PeopleSoft Red Papers covering best practices are available on PeopleSoft Customer Connection Website.

UTF8 Database support

Another important feature of the Peoplesoft /Oracle product stack is the ability to become a truly consolidated global application by use of the Oracle Globalization Features. These include the following features:

• Unicode database,

• Linguistic sorting

• Character semantics

Oracle/Peoplsoft Forums

There is a Peoplesoft/Oracle SIG with the Oracle Users Group and a Oracle/Peoplsoft SIG being formed with the Peoplsoft Users group. Both Oracle and Peoplsoft development teams are committed to attend and listen to these feedback organizations.
