As you may be aware, the new South Glasgow University Hospital and new Royal Hospital for Sick Children are due to open on the current Southern site early in 2015.

With this in mind, please note that positions based within the Victoria Infirmary, Mansionhouse Unit, the Western Infirmary and the current Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill will change location and move to the new hospitals.

Gartnavel General Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary will also have some services affected by moves to the new Hospitals.

SUMMARY INFORMATION RELATING TO THIS POSITION

Post: consultant in craniofacial/oral & maxillofacial surgeon

Base: Southern General Hospital

Applications are invited for a Consultant Craniofacial/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon to join one of the Oral & Maxillofacial Units in the UK. The post is based in Glasgow at the Southern General Hospital, and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. The Royal Hospital for Sick Children will be moving to the New South Glasgow University Hospital in June 2015. There are currently 8 Consultant Surgical posts in the department. The Consultants work in subspecialty teams employing a team approach with close collaboration and cross referral. Applicants for this post should have a subspecialty interest in all aspects of adult and paediatric craniofacial surgery. The department covers all aspects of the specialty including, trauma, facial deformity, craniofacial, cleft and aesthetic surgery for adult and paediatric patients. The on call service is provided across the region with colleagues form the surrounding Health Boards.

Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council, a registerable dental degree, a licence to practise and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC’s Specialist Register in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher Specialist Training leading to CCT or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within six months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training and have some experience of working in the NHS

2. GREATER GLASGOW & CLYDE ACUTE

The Acute Division is undergoing significant organizational change which will see geographical restructuring or services around May 2015. Currently however all acute services across the city and Clyde are under a single management structure led by the Chief Operating Officer. 3. THE SOUTHERN GENERAL HOSPITAL

The Southern General Hospital is a large teaching hospital with an acute operational bed complement of approximately 930 beds. The Hospital is sited in the south-west of Glasgow and provides a comprehensive range of acute and related clinical services. Glasgow’s new adult and paediatric hospital opens on this site in Spring 2015.

Services include Accident and Emergency, Dermatology, ENT, General Medicine (including sub-specialties), General Surgery (including sub-specialties), Medicine for the Elderly (including Assessment, Rehabilitation and Day Services), Gynaecology, Neonatal Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, Physically Disabled Rehabilitation and Continuing Care. In-patient Maxillofacial (trauma and elective surgery and specialist provision for head and neck cancer), Dermatology and the Assessment and Rehabilitation service for the Physically Disabled are also provided for the whole city from the Southern General Hospital.

There is also a wide range of therapeutic services including Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, ECG, Physiotherapy, Radiology (including MRI and CT provision for the general hospital service) and Speech Therapy.

The Institute of Neurological Sciences

The Institute of Neurological Sciences is based on the Southern General campus and provides Neurosurgical, Neurological, Clinical Neurophysiology, Neuroradiological and Neuropathology facilities for the West of Scotland. The Institute is equipped with a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Suite, SPECT Scanner, two Computerised Axial Tomography Scanners, and angiography facilities. The Institute has ICU, HDU and outpatient facilities and also houses Oral & Maxillofacial Services.

Spinal Injuries Unit

The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit for Scotland provides a spinal injuries service to the whole of Scotland. This is housed in a purpose-built facility.

University Links

The Southern General Hospital has built a sound academic and research base over the years, and has an excellent teaching reputation with libraries and lecture suites with comprehensive audio/visual facilities on site. There are close links with the University of Glasgow's Faculty of Medicine including Professors within Neurosciences.

4. WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Regional Maxillofacial Unit encompasses the whole range of surgery for the specialty for both adult and paediatric patients. The department is divided into three broad teams: Deformity comprising craniofacial, cleft lip and palate, orthognathic and TMJ surgery, Oncology including skull base oncology and dental/oral rehabilitation and finally Trauma. There are very strong links with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery colleagues based in the surrounding health boards and there are well-developed plans for the centralisation of all major operative activity at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow. Forth Valley and Ayrshire and Arran Health Boards have already centralised their major procedure in-patients. The on-call system covers the whole of the region.

The department has excellent facilities with two dedicated operating theatres (increasing to 3 in the next 6 months) within a suite of 7 (shared with Neurosurgery). There is considerable flexibility in the use of this resource and this allows for easy combined operating. There is access to our dedicated theatre for out of hours emergencies. Inpatients are accommodated on ward 62 and ward 66A (a 5 day ward shared with neurosurgery). The radiology department is housed within the Institute of Neurosciences and a team of specialist radiologists and radiographers supports us with access to 2 CT scanners and 2 MRI scanners as well as plain radiography. There are excellent Head & Neck interventional radiology facilities. All imaging is available on the national PACS system. Outpatient facilities comprise 3 dental type surgeries, one minor operating theatre and a flexible number of consulting rooms. The photography department has a studio in the department and all images (city wide) are stored on a central server. Within the outpatient department we have a 3D imaging system and cadcam design software. In addition we have a full service maxillofacial technology laboratory with significant expertise in all types of facial prostheses. We also have a camouflage make up service for oncology patients.

The Head & Neck Oncology Service is part of the managed clinical network for head and neck oncology and there are excellent links with the ENT, neurosurgery and plastic surgery departments with collaborative operating and patient management being commonplace.

There are strong research links with the Beatson Oncology Centre and the Academic Department of Surgery. In addition there are longstanding collaborations with the Glasgow Dental Hospital and School.

The craniofacial service is based at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children which is due to relocate onto the Southern General Hospital Site in 2015. The service has a weekly operating list and multidisciplinary clinic. We perform approximately 50 transcranial procedures per year covering the full range of syndromic and non syndromic craniofacial deformities.

The department is supported by 3 WTE and 1 part time associate specialist and has training recognition for 6 higher surgical trainees. In addition seven dental SHOs work in the department on rotation.

5. THE JOB ITSELF

a. Title: Consultant in Craniofacial/ Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

The contract provides for 10 sessions under a 9 direct clinical care and 1 supporting professional activities structure on appointment.

Further SPA time may be allocated to the successful applicant depending on their attributes and the needs of the service.

The post is a substantive appointment. The clinical duties involve all aspects of craniofacial surgery and facial deformity surgery. An interest in either vascular anomalies or temporomandibular joint replacement would be an advantage.

The on call duties involve a 1 in 6 weekend commitment to the regional on call service and a 1 in 4 commitment to the weekday on call system.

(ii) Administration

As well as the usual administrative duties associated with care of patients the appointed consultant will be expected to participate in the management structure of the Regional Maxillofacial Unit and the Regional Services Directorate.

The timetable identifies those fixed sessions, which are dependent on other hospital resources, both physical and human. The remaining duties are incorporated in the narrative.
