Oral Reading - Appalachian State University

Oral Reading

Oral reading is a critical component of each lesson. With all the emphasis on isolated base skills, reading connected text out loud reinforces application of the decoding, phrasing and comprehension skills that students have been learning. Students cannot build fluency and automaticity without practice. For fluency purposes, leveled passages are carefully chosen based upon exposure to phonemes and syntactic structure.

While fluency is typically measured by the number of words read accurately per minute, I believe that the true definition lies in the ability to read accurately and smoothly in order glean meaning from the test. For this reason, I do not typically ‘time’ readings. The National Reading Panel report concluded that guided oral reading is important for developing reading fluency. Additional Emphasis is placed upon developing active reading strategies (summarizing, questioning, connecting….) and vocabulary development.
