Council Members Present: None

I. Call to Order and Roll Call

The meeting was called to order by Mr. Michael Hart at 2:02 p.m.

II. Introduction of Council, Staff & Guests

Council members, staff and guests were introduced.

III. Adoption of Agenda

Mr. Hart stated that Item D was not ready for review and should be removed from the agenda. The council discussed the amendment to the agenda.

Mr. Tarmey made a motion to adopt the agenda as amended. Dr. Jackson seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted.

IV. Approval of Minutes from May 20, 2021, meeting.

Dr Jackson made a motion to approve the minutes from May 20, 2021 as corrected. Mr. Tarmey seconded. The motion was unanimously approved.

V. Staff Announcements

There were no staff announcements.

VI. Review of Marker Applications

A. Williams-LeRoy House, Alachua, Alahua County

Ms. Shelly Nice in attendance via webinar to represent the marker application. Council members, staff and the marker’s representatives discussed modifications to the marker text.

Mr. Tarmey made a motion to provisionally approve the marker application as a Florida Heritage Site with modifications to the marker text as suggested by the Council with the condition that Mr. Hart would work with the applicant to further edit the text, and then submit it to the council for comment. Dr. Jackson seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted.

B. Gainesville Woman’s Club, Gainesville, Alachua County

Ms. Melanie Barr was in attendance via webinar to represent the marker application. Council members, staff and the marker’s representative discussed modifications to the marker text.

Mr. Tarmey made a motion to approve the marker application as a Florida Heritage Site with modifications to the marker text as suggested by the Council. Dr. Jackson seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted.

C. Augusta Savage, Sculptor and Teacher, Green Cove Springs, Clay County

Mr. Gerard Casale was in attendance via webinar to represent the marker application. Council members, staff and the marker’s representative discussed modifications to the marker text.

Dr. Jackson made a motion to approve the marker application as a Florida Heritage Site with modifications to the marker text as suggested by the Council. Mr. Tarmey seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted.

D. Historic Ike William Cemetery, Quincy, Gadsden County

Supplemental materials for this application had not been received and it was not ready for review. This item was removed from the agenda.

E. Franciscan Center, Founded 1970, Tampa, Hillsborough County

Ms. Theresa Collington was in attendance via webinar to represent the marker application. Council members, staff and the marker’s representative discussed modifications to the marker text.

Mr. Tarmey made a motion to approve the marker application as a Florida Heritage Site with modifications to the marker text as suggested by the Council. Dr. Jackson seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted.

F. Treasure Hammock Ranch Farmstead and Cow Pens, Vero Beach, Indian River County

Mr. Sean Sexton was in attendance via webinar to represent the marker application. Council members, staff and the marker’s representative discussed modifications to the marker text.

Mr. Tarmey made a motion to approve the marker application as a Florida Heritage Site with modifications to the marker text as suggested by the Council. Dr. Jackson seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted.

G. Town of Rye, Parrish, Manatee County

Ms. Sarah Denison was in attendance via webinar to represent the marker application. Council members, staff and the marker’s representative discussed modifications to the marker text.

Mr. Tarmey made a motion to approve the marker application as a Florida Heritage Site with modifications to the marker text as suggested by the Council. Dr. Jackson seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted.

H. The Stewart House, Fernandina Beach, Nassau County

Ms. Allean Gillyard and Ms. Tezlyn Watts were in attendance via webinar to represent the marker application. Council members, staff and the marker’s representatives discussed modifications to the marker text.

Mr. Tarmey called for a motion to approve the marker on a preliminary basis, pending revisions by the staff and the applicant. Dr. Jackson seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted.

I. Grace Episcopal Church, Port Orange, Volusia County

Ms. Patricia Dolan was in attendance via webinar to represent the marker application. Council members, staff and the marker’s representative discussed modifications to the marker text.

Dr. Jackson called for a motion to approve the marker on a preliminary basis, pending revisions by the staff and the applicant. Mr. Tarmey seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted.

J. Old Wakulla County Courthouse, Crawfordville, Wakulla County

There was no one in attendance to represent the marker application. Council members and staff discussed modifications to the marker text.

Mr. Tarmey called for a motion to approve the marker on a preliminary basis, pending revisions by the staff and the applicant. Dr. Jackson seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted.

K. Old Wakulla Jail, Crawfordville, Wakulla County

There was no one in attendance to represent the marker application. Council members and staff discussed modifications to the marker text.

Mr. Tarmey called for a motion to approve the marker on a preliminary basis, pending revisions by the staff and the applicant. Dr. Jackson seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted.

VII. Other Business

Mr. Hart stated that the next Florida Historical Marker Council meeting would be on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at 2:00 p.m.

VIII. Public Comment

There was no public comment.

IX. Motion to Adjourn

Mr. Tarymey made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Dr. Jackson seconded. The motion was unanimously adopted. The meeting was adjourned at 3:42 p.m. Staff thanked members of the Council for their service on the Historical Marker Council.
