Music Resources for the ACNA
Creating a Digital OrchestraOur Anglican church has had the fortune of having many proficient High School and Adult wind and string players become a part of our Folk Group/Praise Team over the years. After many years of experimentation, the instruments that have worked well in playing melody, harmony, obbligato’s, and descants have been flutists, violinists, oboists, clarinetists, cellists, trumpeters, and French Horn Players. These melodic instruments have added much to our congregation’s singing. However, when a qualified live player is not available, we have supplemented the group’s sound with a keyboardist playing a Digital Orchestra and this has worked very well for us. After much trial and error, here is what works.Purchase the following and hook it together:A digital keyboard and stand with plug-n-play USB MIDI input.A Window’s Surface Pro 3 tablet running Windows 10 with a USB port and at least 4GB of RAM. (Mount the tablet on the top end of the digital keyboard with Velcro.)A copy of EAST/WEST’s Symphonic Orchestra’s SILVER EDITION ORCHESTA (EWQLSO SILVER COMPLETE 16-BIT) downloading and using their PLAYER application for live performance (license required) on the Window’s Surface Tablet. (These digital samples will astound you and after reading the instructions and some experimentation, the use of the Player app. will become second nature.)Two powered speakers from Behringer: B2031A active 2-Way Studio Monitors (high-quality, cost-effective, powered speakers. You can find quality used ones on Ebay.) The Behringer B2030A powered speakers also work well. They are a slightly smaller version but sound very good. Just be certain to order the model numbers ending with an “A” for active and not a “P” for passive/non-powered speakers.A mini-stereo out male connector from the Window Surface Tablet’s audio output to two ?” audio male connectors to run to the two speakers.A powered USB multi-port hub for connecting the keyboard, East/West orchestra license dongle, etc. to the Window’s Surface Pro 3 tablet.—Mark K.
