EXAMPLES OF ARIAL FONT TYPE SIZES

The “point” system is used to measure type sizes. “Point” indicates the height of a type from its lowest point (such as the bottom of a “y”) to its highest capital (such as the top of the “I”). 72 point type is 1 inch high. Most newspapers are in 8 point type, most adult books are in either 10 or 12 point type, 14 point type is the minimum for being considered large print, and most large print materials are in either 16 or 18 point type.

Height of letters: For M size and 20/20 equivalents.

Jaeger types vary. These measurements are based on B & L Card and Dr. Ziegler’s which are in reasonable agreement with each other. The letters measured were lower case “e” and “o”.

What is Large Print?

Large print is type 14 to 30 points high. All type is measured in points from the bottom of the lowest letter to the top of the tallest letter; type one inch high measures 72 points. Some students with visual impairments find large print materials much easier to read than conventional print. Because large print books are usually produced on non-glare paper with ample spacing around the letters, such materials are also helpful for those with reading disabilities. This section contains examples of type considered large print or large type:
