Activities for multiplication instruction and practice:

Activities for fraction instruction and practice:

1. Instructional materials:

Rulers, pattern blocks, counters, blank paper, construction paper, grid paper, dot paper, square tiles, geoboards, fraction bars, fraction circles, cuisenaire rods

2. Building models with counters, unifix cubes, pattern blocks, etc.

Using manipulatives to create models of fractions, equivalents, problems and equations can help students visualize the concepts. It is important to use a variety of models to represent the three meanings of fractions – part/whole, quotient, and ratio. For part/whole or quotient fractions region, length, set, and area models are helpful.

3. Paper folding

Paper folding not only can be used to introduce fractions, but also to illustrate equivalent fractions. Later it can be used to show division of fractions.

4. Drawing a model

This is a critical skill for students in working with fractions and understanding conceptually the meaning of the operations.

5. Multiplication Chart

A multiplication chart is a ready source of information when working with fractions as it identifies factors and multiples. With the aid of 2 colored strips students can find equivalent fractions, determine lowest common multiples, and greatest common factors for many numbers.

6. Power cards

This is played like the card game war. Face cards are removed from the cards and they are divided evenly between 2 players. The players turn their cards over simultaneously. The first player to name the fraction or simplify the improper fraction keeps the cards. It is helpful determine what color will represent the numerator when simplifying fractions. At other times the lower number will be the numerator.

7. Dominoes

Dominoes, especially colored ones, a provide excellent support for students working with fractions. It is easy to recognize the sets . Students can use dominoes to relate models to symbols, generate practice for simplfying fractions, match equivalent fractions or create problems to solve.

= = = 1 ½

8. Fraction Dice, Spinners

These can be used to identify fractions for naming, ordering, and generating problems.

9. Matches and Sorts

Consider sorting by common denominators, equivalent, proper/improper, greater than ½-less than ½, etc.

10. Fraction bingo

Use cards with proper fractions, mixed numbers, improper fractions, equivalent fractions, problems, or a combination. Have students lead the activity.

11. Recipes/cooking, Construction/measurement
