6. Director Reports:

6.1 President – Mike Sarai

I’m pleased to report and observe that organizing and planning is in full swing specifically from the local association base and our administration on

several familiar areas.

From our administration I can confirm that Anne and Terry will process all Kids Play applications.

We have received from the Gaming Branch their decision on our appeal for funding which they have denied. This decision will not hamper our abilities to

deliver on current or past items which we prepared for regardless of the Gaming outcome. Our 2016 budget is complete and will be accessible to our

association President’s upon request.

Our annual Coaching Conference is on track this month which will provide greater instruction and education to many coaches seeking to improve their

coaching abilities.

I will also report that Saskatchewan whom is the 2016 hosting Province for the Western 15U (Bantam) AAA is unable to fulfill that requirement this year and

offered B.C. to host the championship to which Baseball B.C. has declined stating the timeline of securing a host is too short.

I attended the Vancouver Canadians luncheon which appeared to go quite well.

6.2 1st Vice President – John Braaten

Re: Northwest Baseball Coaches Convention 2016 – Portland Oregon

Orville and I were given the opportunity to attend this year’s event held at the Sheraton Airport Hotel Portland on behalf of BC Baseball. The 3 day

conference had over 400 attendees from the Pacific Northwest. From what we were able to observe we were the only BC Baseball members in attendance from

British Columbia.

This event was put together by Jerry Gatto of NW Star Productions. They had 20+ speakers over the 2 and-a-half day Conference. Regional guest speakers that

stood out during the conference were: Jose-Rijo-Berger who spoke to “creating winning relationships through sports”, Troy P. Silva “9 innings of hitting”

both of Rijo Athletics and Jeremiah Robbins of Lewis-Clark State College with the topic “physical and mental approach to hitting/blue collar approach of

hitting” and Gregg Swenson of Portland University “Raising the Roof” of one’s potential.

Out-of-town speakers included Justin Stone and Travis Kerber of Elite Baseball Training out of Chicago. Justin’s second year of speaking at this conference

and is a stand out as noted last year. Both bring modern philosophies and teachings. Another speaker that stood out was Matt Morse who spoke multiple times

discussing “mental conditioning for baseball.

This event was packed with various speakers listed above added in with a mix of Northwest Coaches at the High School and College levels adding different

perspectives to give an all-round picture of baseball within this Region.

When all was said and done I was very impressed with both Elite Baseball Instructors and Matt Morse. Both successful and have different philosophies that

have shown success in recent times. This year’s convention was split with baseball 101’s of the game but also mixed in was various speakers regarding the

mental and communication side of the game. Something that I believe needs to be brought to our Convention in the future.

Saturday evening the Convention had various breakout sessions for Q&A will a number of the guest speakers. I sat in on the generalized college discussion

with Don Adams (College Baseball Advisor), Dan Spencer (Washington State Univ. and Randy Myers former MLB pitcher). Discussion was all over the board, but

was most interesting as pitching was mostly discussed and Randy Myers brought a “pro” perspective in learning/listening to become a better teacher.

As for Vendor there were quite a many ranging from fundraising, turf & dirt sales, sport companies, video companies and even the Orange Guy (fundraising

selling oranges). The number of sponsors was done from the previous year but still had essential baseball companies and representatives. Vendor wise,

nothing too out-of-the box that would work for the BC Baseball Coaching Convention that isn’t already offered like Purdy’s that tried last two years to

integrate fundraising to no avail with our member associations.

With the Canadian dollar exchange being low local companies like MVP, Prostock and others sell exactly the same products as offered at this Conference. I

collected most business cards and pamphlets to review and invite where it makes sense for BC Baseball. Traffic where vendors were located was low but not

dead between speakers, but they did have many breaks to allow foot traffic for them. This is something our convention can do better.

Overall, I was impressed with the Conference and would say our Coaches Convention is comparable in its offerings if not better. Only thing we can build on

and Mike Kelly is doing this diligently is the amount of attendees. Jerry estimated almost 400 would attend over the weekend and we could only hope to

attain this number in the coming years.

Mike thanked John Braaten for all his help and job well done

6.7 Interior – Tom Katelnikoff/Terry Chudyk

The Interior Associations are busy with various Winter Ball programs and registration has begun in all interior associations for the Spring Season. The

Interior Spring Meeting is scheduled for Saturday March 5th tentatively at the Kelowna Sandman Hotel at 11AM.

We have got the word out for the BC Baseball Coaches Convention and we are hoping to get between 25-35 coaches to attend from the Interior. The newest

Association, Central Okanagan Minor Baseball Association (Kelowna/Rutland) have 17 Coaches Registered themselves for the convention; they have done an

outstanding job promoting the convention.

Associations are in the planning stages for holding NCCP Clinics and we are trying to collaborate our efforts so as not to overlap with other clinics.

Associations are looking forward to the Coaches Caravan travelling through the Okanagan again this year. We are also working with a number of associations

who may be starting up this year including Princeton & Osoyoos. I have been in contact with Merritt, at present they are only running the softball program

but we are trying to make contact and perhaps do a mini-camp there this spring to gauge interest at present.

6.8 North – Brenda Astorino

The Midget division in Prince George met with the local Men’s Fastball club to ask permission to use Citizen Field if we were to apply for the Midget AA

Provincials this year. They were happy to accommodate the request and our application has been sent to BCBA.

Registration for the 2016 season begins in March and we are expecting another increase in our membership. 2016 is a year of Baseball in Prince George with

the Native Fastball Championships and World Baseball Challenge here this summer. This and how well the Blue Jays did this year should increase interest in

the sport.

We have also committed to the BC Summer Games and have an interested coach who has come forward. He will be sending out letters to all of the Northern

communities to ask for interest and to let them know when tryouts will be hosted.

I have reached out to Terrace and Quesnel via email to see if they need any help or support to commit to a 2016 season in their communities, I will keep

everyone updated.
