Donate Life North Carolina (DLNC) is a collaborative group ...

Donate Life North Carolina (DLNC) is a collaborative group of organizations that promote organ, eye and tissue donation. Our member organizations (Carolina Donor Services, LifeShare Of The Carolinas and the NC Eye Bank) are the designated organ, eye and tissue recovery agencies directly involved in supporting donor families and facilitating transplants across the state.   As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, our work includes school education, Division of Motor Vehicles outreach and donor registry supervision. Our mission is to inspire all North Carolinians to save and enhance lives by registering as organ, eye and tissue donors.

The North Carolina Donor Registry

• Is a confidential, secure computerized database that documents a person's decision regarding donation.

• The Heart Prevails Law passed in 2007 makes your decision to be an organ, eye and/or tissue donor legally binding.  Families are closely involved in the donation process, but cannot override their loved one's decision if they are age 18 or older.  By joining the registry, you can be assured that your wishes will be honored.

• The registry is managed and maintained through a partnership between Donate Life NC and the NC Division of Motor Vehicles. You can join the NC Donor Registry by signing up online at or at the DMV when you get or renew your license/ID.

Our work:

With funding provided by the License to Give Trust Fund Commission since 2007, DLNC has:

• Managed the online registry,

• Created a website for easy access to information about organ, eye and tissue donation and ways you can support our mission,

• Provided curriculum and outreach to Driver’s Education teachers throughout the state to inform students before they get their driver’s licenses and are asked, “do you want to be an organ donor?” when they are at the DMV,

• Provided educational materials for DMV offices, and

• Coordinated public information campaigns in partnership with Donate Life America.

Our results:

• North Carolina ranks #6 in the country for the size of our donor registry.

• Over 4.1 million North Carolina residents are registered to be organ, eye and tissue donors.

• 99% of those who registered did so through their local DMV
