Greek Sing

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How many hours a week can we practice?

Answer: Unlimited hours between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and midnight.

2. What is the time limit for Greek Sing performances?

Answer: Maximum of 4 minutes.

3. What is the amount each member can spend on costumes?

Answer: $30.00 maximum per costume.

4. What is the minimum amount of people that can be singing at one time during the

performance?

Answer: 6 people. These six people can sing for up to 30 seconds.

5. Who can be our chapter’s Greek Sing Director?

Answer: Any active member in the sorority or fraternity.

6. Who can be our instrumentalists during the performance?

Answer: A chapter may choose anyone to play the piano or all other instrumentalists.

7. Who tallies the judge sheets?

Answer: Graduate assistants and/or EIU staff.

8. What happens if my chapter picks the same music as another chapter?

Answer: There will be a drawing at the second meeting for the Greek Sing Directors. It would be a good idea to have back-up songs just in case.

Deductions

A deduction can either take points away from the overall final performance or attendance points depending upon the violation.

Performance Deductions – 3 points will be taken away if any of the following happens.

- If the chapter color is not incorporated into the costume.

- If there are use of props or paraphernalia.

- If feet move from original position on risers.

-Time limit violation.

-The Greek Sing Committee does have the final say to deduct points if there is any violation.

Meeting Deductions – One point will be taken from your attendance points if you do any of the following.

- Do not show up at meetings.

- If paperwork or materials are turned in late.

2016 GREEK SING RULES

Rules and Guidelines:

1. Each chapter’s performance must be an on-stage choral presentation including at least 40% of your chapter members.

2. All performers must be on the official roster in the Fraternity & Sorority Programs Office.

3. Appropriate dress for a formal competition required for all men and women participating in the competition: Dresses, skirts, slacks, khakis, shirts, shoes, ties, collared shirts. No jeans, sandals, gym shoes or informal attire permitted.

4. You must coordinate your chapter color into your costume.

5. All songs and lyrics must be approved by the Greek Sing Committee by the meeting on March 2nd at 9:30pm. All fraternities and sororities are expected to adhere to common standards of decency and non-discrimination. Fraternities and sororities should be aware their performances are representative of their organization. Examples of theme sensitivity include but are not limited to:

• Themes should be ethnically and/or racially sensitive in nature and not degrade individuals or groups of people.

• All performance themes must be sensitive to gender issues. Sexist behavior should not be exhibited including costuming choices.

• No special mention of alcohol or drugs should be created in song lyrics. Performance themes cannot be focused around the use of alcohol or drugs. Professionally written song lyrics including alcohol may be permitted based upon performance theme and content.

• All costumes should be sensitive in nature regarding the aforementioned areas of theme sensitivity.

6. Solos, duets and trios are not permitted due to the fact Greek Sing is an example of the entire chapter and should not be based upon the performance of a minority of the group. No less than a sextet (6) may sing alone, and the sextet may only sing up to 30 seconds during the entire 4-minute performance.

7. Only performers from the participating chapters will be admitted free. All others wishing to attend must pay a general admission fee for balcony or floor seats.

8. Priority seat blocks will only be saved for those chapters participating in Greek Sing.

9. Any misconduct or misbehavior (to be determined by school administration and/or Overall Greek Week Steering Committee) will result in disciplinary actions and possible disqualification.

10. Equipment on stage may not be moved.

11. There is a four-minute limit on the length of the performance with a limit of 6 songs. This will be time from the first audible sound to the last. Exceeding the time limit will be considered a deduction of performance points.

12. Chapters may practice as much as they want as long as they want, as long as they do not practice between midnight and 8:00am.

13. No props or any other paraphernalia may be brought on stage. A prop is defined, but not limited to an object or piece of clothing that isn’t seen, worn, and/or touched during the entire performance.

14. Each chapter is limited to a piano, drum set, and three hand-held instruments, which must be approved by the Greek Sing Committee no later than March 23, 2016.

15. The score sheets will be on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest and one being the lowest.

16. The point system is based on total points given by all judges.

17. All Greek Sing chapters will participate in a preliminary screening conducted by the Greek Sing Committee.

18. Body movement is permissible as long as feet do not leave the risers.

19. The Chapter Greek Sing Director must be an active member of the performing fraternity or sorority.

20. The performing chapter may select any person it wishes to play piano or other instruments.

21. All fraternities and sororities wearing costumes may not spend more than $30 for each performing

member’s costume. All chapters must present all receipts for their costumes to the Greek Sing

Committee. Receipts are to be turned in no later than March 23rd at 9:30pm.

20. The Greek Sing Committee will be calling Directors to come and watch at least one practice at each chapter.

23. Each chapter will receive 5 points for participation. Additionally, points will be awarded as follows: First Place (5), Second Place (3), and Third Place (1).

20. The Greek Sing Committee, Advisor, and Director of Fraternity & Sorority Programs will make the final decisions regarding violations of rules and point reductions.

21. Dress rehearsal is mandatory for every participant and must include a full out performance (including costumes, musicians, and music selection in their entirety). Failure to do so will result in point reduction or removal from event.

I understand the Institution does not require me to participate in this activity, but I want to do so, despite the possible dangers and risks and despite this Release.

I, therefore agree to assume and take on myself all of this risks and responsibilities in any way associated with this activity. In consideration of and return for the services, facilities and other assistance provided to me by the Institution in this activity, I release the Institution (and its governing board, employees, and agents) from any and all liability, claims and actions that may arise from injury or harm me, from my death, or from damage to my property in connection with this activity. I understand this release covers liability, claims and actions caused entirely or in part by any acts or failures to act of the Institution ( or its governing board, employees, or agents), including but not limited to negligence, mistake or failure to supervise the Institution.
