Theories:

Origins of the Solar System

(mini class project)

Scientific Theory noun. A concept that has been well tested, and is accepted as an explanation to a wide range of observations.

Our study of Earth’s moon introduced us to Collision Theory on the formation of the moon. This theory states that “about 4.5 billion yeas ago, when Earth was very young, an object at least as large as Mars collided with Earth. Material from the Earth’s outer layers was thrown into orbit around Earth. Eventually this material combined to form the moon.” (taken from pg. 40 of your text book)

In Chapter 2, we will be studying the Solar System. Before we begin the unit, we will take a quick pause to read about different theories on the creation of the solar system.

Task:

1. You will be assigned to a group of 3 members or less. (Abbey Cadabby)

2. Your group will be assigned a theory (most of these theories are on the creation of the universe). Research your theory and take notes. Some websites are provided for you.

* The Nebular Hypothesis

* The Planetesimal Theory

* The Tidal Theory

* Big Bang Theory

* The Turbulence theory (or Whipple’s Dust Cloud Hypothesis)

4. You will create a sketch of the theory that explains your theory using a few words (captions), simple drawings, and is easy to understand. See the Collision Theory drawing on pg 40 in your text as an example. Another sketch example is shown below. (Be sure to add captions)

*Make sure you explain how your theory shows the formation of the solar system

*Additional information to add: Proposer and date of proposal.

5. Challenge: Research the arguments for the theory that caused the

theory to be accepted or arguments against the theory that cause the theory to be

rejected.
