CATE Board Reports (September 2018)Greg JohnsonPresidentHello all,I am excited and looking forward to seeing you all this weekend. As for my "report," I have been busy tying up the loose ends of the Treasurer responsibilities and transitioning to the Presidential ones. Thank you Angela, Patrick, Jill, and Denise for all of your time and help in making this happen. Putting together an agenda is surprisingly complicated (at least it was for this first one), and I appreciate all of the people who have stepped up and accepted leadership roles as we begin another year. Please take a look at the agenda and shoot me any suggestions for change (although at this late hour, I have already printed them and will probably have to pencil suggestions in). I appreciate all of your hard work and am excited to be with you all again.Safe travels,GregDenise Mikkonen, Past PresidentSeptember CATE Board ReportI am working with Greg to ensure we have a smooth transition to his Presidency.? We have had several conversations, one via advisory call.? I have consulted with the Awards sub-committee and we have a nominee for Distinguished Service Award that I will share at the Board Meeting.? The forms for Classroom Excellence are attached.? They need to be complete by our December meeting.? Please use home addresses, last year several folks did not get their information when the letters were addressed to the school.? I will need two copies of each complete nomination form.? IIn other educational news, our new building at school has been completed and we had 4 days to unpack a pile of furniture and boxes placed in the center of the room.?? We started school with no printers, copy machines and new technology without the cables.? Added to that was the news that I was teaching a standalone 4/5 combo.? I am currently up to my eyeballs with 4 and 5 grade curriculum.? Our district adopted a new ELA program and I am the site leader.? I made it through Back to School Night, got my technology to work (gave up and bought my own printer and cables).? My classroom is beautiful, it is on the second floor, I have vaulted ceilings and three huge windows with beautiful views. My students are delightful, parents have accepted the 4/5 concept. And they already have a solid place in my heart.? We are off to a great start,? it is going to be a great year. We are working with Central council to put on the Yosemite conference this April and are developing ideas for workshops we can offer in the 2019-2020 year. This summer, we had a successful book club that focused on the books Dear Martin and Girls Burn Brighter. We are carrying on the tradition with a slow read this fall of the book Purple Hibiscus that we will discuss over winter break. We are continually looking for new members and find ways to reach teachers in districts that have low membership/turn out. David – Currently working on his national board certification and is a khan academy ambassador this year. He is experimenting with standards-based grading which has consumed much of his time and he looks forward to seeing the outcome of his efforts. Our main focus was planning and supporting future SCWriP endeavors, how to become more involved, and how to take greater steps in expanding the reach of the project’s mission, teachers teaching teachers.? My big take away was designing a business plan to bring the Young Writers Camp to Kern County.? This was discussed at the KCTE board meeting on August 24th resulting in the creation of a sub-committee to work out the details of making the plan a reality in bring the Kern River Young Writers Camp to the talented children of Kern County.? ?I would also like to share that I took my family (the wife, two kids, and dog) on a road trip back to my home state of Wisconsin.? We were on the road for over a month and turned over 7000 miles on the old odometer.? As I begin a new school year with 170 new faces, I see two things more clearly, I love my family more than I ever thought possible, and I love this country for all its beauty and splendor, its faults and differences.? And, I mostly have books to thank for giving me a way to feel a sense of belonging no matter how far away from home.? As I drove through the canyons of Utah, I followed the words of Abbey’s Desert Solitaire; drifting across Nebraska’s infinite horizon of prairie grass and Cabela’s, I was met by Cather’s My Antonia, nearing Montana’s Highway 2, I channeled Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance; around Washington’s Puget Sound, I felt Guterson’s Snow Falling on Cedars; and even with Oregon’s full-service gas station attendant’s resemblance to Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, I felt a sincere and genuine connection to this sweet land.?I also read a couple of back issues of California English and English Journal.? ?Respectfully Submitted,?Robert Polski, MAL SecondaryJeannine Ugalde, MAL SecondaryPublications Chair ReportI have coordinated with Carole LeCren, Carol Jago, Angus, and Cindy Conlin to get the two writing contests on-line and in California English. I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday!Since our last meeting I have left the X-Ploration program at Poway Unified School District and have begun a new adventure as a 7th grade humanities teacher at Mesa Verde Middle School.? I have enjoyed being back in the classroom and teaching reading, writing and social studies again.? Because there is a new social studies framework, I am leading my team in developing curriculum that addresses the new essential questions. Over the summer I conducted two writing camps.? Both camps were a huge success.? I lead the kids in various creative writing projects and then we learned about expository writing.? The kids created a digital newspaper that went out to thousands of homes.I continue to look for ways to improve the CATE website to make it as useful as possible for our members.? Sommer IameleMesa Verde Middle School7th Grade HumanitiesCarmen Carrillo, MAL CollegeHi Everyone,This summer has been one of constant change at the community college level due to AB705.? Now that the state has required that all incoming freshman must enroll in English 1A/101 (Freshman Composition), almost every college is working on curriculum changes to best address those students who may need additional resources. At my college, Los Angeles Harbor College, we are creating Professional Development workshops for the campus to clarify our work and how we will provide resources.? We also are planning department monthly brown bag lunches to discuss what is working in our classrooms as many of us are trained in CAP--California Accelerated Program.?The colleges are also wrestling with the state's proposed new funding formula.? Legislatures approved a performance based funding formula for the 114 CCCs.? The argument to move from enrollment numbers to performance is based on the Chancellor's goal of increasing degree and certificate production, which can lead to higher transfer rates.? So now it is not who is in your class in the first 3 weeks, but who remains and successfully completes the course.? The governor has also budgeted $100M to build a new online community college.Personally, this summer I taught online and had the rare opportunity to stay at home to rest.? I took advantage and visited Disneyland as much as possible.? But now reality has set in--teaching 4 online classes and 2 face to face, including the Puente Project English class.Respectfully submitted,Carmen?Bill Foreman, MAL Small CouncilSeptember 6, 2018?Hello all!?My primary CATE responsibility at this time is Program Chair.? Marina Santos, Kathy Nichols I had a planning meeting in Modesto in July. I also attended a meeting of the Curriculum Study Commission in August. Planning for this October Conference was in final stages. Registration is at a slighter higher place than at the same time last year. I spent three weeks in July working with Ron Jones (best known for The Wave) and our intern from Santa Clara University. We worked with teens at the Marsh Conservatory Theatre and focused on scenes and shorter pieces with love as a theme. The hit of the performance was the college intern’s texting version of Romeo and Juliet’s balcony scene. I sent updated copies of the election and awards forms to the new Past President. Rachel Watson from McKinleyville will receive the High School Teacher of Excellence Award at NCTE in Houston. As far as convention planning, speakers are being finalized, the writing contests and call for presenters were posted on our FB page and CATEweb, and the CATE 2019 flyer and new online registration system are being completed. We’re running a bit behind our usual schedule, but should have all up and going this month of September. We hope to introduce/test our online registration system to board members at the meeting this weekend, and be online officially a week later, provided all speaker contracts are secured by then. Our FB members (almost 1400) are aware that we’ll be up and running this month; I’ve also fielded many email requests for information on CATE 2019. There is excitement building – yay!BOD members will be asked at meeting to commit to the number of flyers you’d like shipped to you for distribution at your council meetings, local conferences (CATE, CTA, other), intern teacher programs, wherever. Remember success of convention is tied directly to number of attendees. The Call for Presenters will be closed October 1 (or a wee bit later). Please inspire wonderful workshop facilitators you might know to submit a proposal!BOD members are reminded to register for convention by December 1. This year you will be given a code by email which grants complimentary registration as voted on at last year’s meeting. Travel and rooms are also covered by CATE per policy. You will still be required to pay for meal events. A conference call involving EventPower, Cindy, Annie, Carole, Joan, and I resulted in many questions being answered about the nuts and bolts of this (new to CATE) exciting system that will simplify convention registration. Clearly Cindy’s taking a liaison role as we transition is critical. Annie and I will talk a bit about the new program at meeting, including the continued need for reg booths, and lead retrieval, something our exhibitors will relish. At the December meeting I will be asking for your rooming needs for convention. Please arrange ahead of time with another member of the Board with whom you intend to share a room. Remember that we only receive a fixed number of discounted rooms, thus would prefer that Board members share rooms when possible. (New BOD members – do NOT make your own room reservations; we do this for you.)The hotel is replacing its online registration system but assure CATE that there will be no issues with regards to our attendees registering for our convention.Several email and phone discussions transpired between Curtin and me regarding our exhibit hall placement and the charges CATE wishes to assume for our potential exhibitors, approved at the May meeting, a single table and chair for each exhibitor. More information about that will be discussed at our committee meeting and then shared to the at large group. Annie Gervais, CATE 2019 ChairCATE 2019 Convention Chair Report September 2018 Michelle and I have been hard at work on speakers for the convention. Though we have five committed, we are still waiting to hear from a few to plug in the last two. Coupled with the EventPower registration changes, this is the reason we do not yet have flyers. We do plan to catch up in the next few weeks and be ready to print flyers by the end of September. Further, we plan to discuss in convention committee some new ideas for Sunday morning sessions. As school just started, we have not had a local convention committee, so we will have one soon. We are in need of some help with soliciting swag for attendee bags, and for someone to supervise the new teachers booth, among a few other things. Finally, I would like to report that last Saturday morning, time unknown, one of our members, only in his second year of teaching passed away in his sleep. He was only 31 and is survived by his wife and 7 month old son. He was thrilled to be a member of CATE when he joined as a student teacher two years ago, and loved this profession that we have all chosen.
