Most things we see, hear, taste, smell, and touch are made of some kind of matter. In this unit, you will learn some of the ways that people change matter. You will also learn about the different forms matter takes by viewing, reading, and listening to informational texts, a poem, and a letter. You will find out how something old can become new as matter changes form.Watch introduction to Unit 10 States of MatterRead the essential Question: How can something old become new?Answer Question:1 What are some new things that people make from wood?2 What are some new things that people make from paper?3 What is something that changes its form if you heat, freeze, or cut it?Read “Soap Shapes” page 4 and Answer Questions 1. What are some ways to form soap into shapes?2. How can soap flakes change to become a bar of soap?3. What does the word sculpted mean?4. What type of matter is soap? How do you know that?Seesaw -Spelling PyramidRead “It’s All Water” page 5 (Assigned in Benchmark)First Identify and write the rhyming word pairs.Next Answer the following Questions:1. Ask yourself “What does the author want me to know?” and “How can I tell?” Answer the following Questions:1.What does the author want to teach readers? How can you tell?2. Why does the selection include numbered steps?3. What is the author trying to tell readers in the last paragraph?Second Use Images to Clarify aText:Example : Look at the pictureThe text says: In step one, the author says to start the craft project by getting a square piece of paper. It recommends using an 8-inch square. The photograph helps me imagine how big the square should be. It also helps me realize that I could use any color paper. There aren’t blue dogs in real life, but making a blue dog from paper could be fun! For Step 2 The text says to fold the paper to make a triangle.1. How does the photograph for that step help readers know what to do? For Step 4 The text says to unfold the triangle and that there will be a crease. 1. What additional information in the photo makes the text clearer?Spelling Test on Spelling CityRead “Sand Sculptures” pages 10 -13 (Assigned in Benchmark)Use Root Words: words are made up of different parts. Example: usable and reuse are similar in meaning because they both have a part that is the same, the root word use. In paragraph 2 is sculptors. In the caption above that paragraph, I see the word sculpture. I know that these two words must have similar meanings because they both have the same root word, sculpt. Knowing that sculpt means “to carve or form something from a hard material” helps me figure out that a sculptor is “an artist who makes things by carving and shaping hard material” and a sculpture is “a work of art created by carving or shaping hard material.”Complete the chart in SeeSaw: Longer Word (paragraph)Root WordMeaning of Longer Wordcompetitions (2)construction (2)creations (2)Next Time Order Words used to understand the order of steps. Time-order words like first, next, then, and last to help readers understand the order of steps. In the caption on page 12, the author uses the word First to let us know that the first thing the sculptors do to make a sand castle is to shovel sand into bottomless boxes. The word Then is another clue that tells you what step comes next, adding water and packing down the wet sand. Now identify the remaining steps in making a sand sculpture (in The Story) by putting the following sentences in order as a completed paragraph using time order words. (Complete in SeeSaw)1. Shovel tons of sand into bottomless wooden boxes.2. Add water and pack down the wet san.3. Stack blocks of hard, wet sand.4. Smooth the sand and shape it.MathWork at your own pace.Smarter Balanced Assessment workbook Review areas of need Smarter Balanced Assessment workbookReview areas of need Smarter Balanced Assessment workbook Review areas of need Smarter Balanced Assessment workbook Review areas of need Smarter Balanced Assessment workbook Review areas of need I-ReadyReading20 minsReading20 minsMath 20 mins Math 20 minsMath or Reading20 minsWriting Have your child complete a daily writing prompt set up in seesaw.May Writing Prompt SheetDay 11May Writing Prompt SheetDay 12May Writing Prompt SheetDay 13 May Writing Prompt SheetDay 14May Writing Prompt SheetDay 15Phonics/GrammarSpelling City15 mins dailyPossessives - in SeeSawSpelling City15 mins dailyComparatives - in SeeSawSpelling City15 mins dailyProper Nouns - In SeeSawSpelling City15 mins daily“er” and “est” - in SeeSawSpelling City15 mins dailyVocab/Sight Words - in SeeSawSocial Studies/ScienceMystery Science Can Animals Get a Sunburn?Mystery Science Why do We Wear Clothes?Materials needed:Aluminum FoilClothes pinsPaper cupsPaper lunch bagPaper platesPaper towelsPlastic spoonsThin stringOr any materials similar to the above that around the house.Mystery Science How is Plastic Made?Mystery Science Can you really fry an egg on a hot sidewalk?Materials needed:Aluminum FoilPlastic BottlesSocksStyrofoam cupsOr any materials similar to the above that around the house.Mystery Science Why do we sweat when we play sports?Physical EducationGo Noodle 10 min.
