In the poem, “I am a Rock” the poet, Paul Simon, writes a poem that effectively portrays the many feelings of the speaker. It is clear throughout the poem that the speaker feels lonely and all alone so he avoids friendship and other types of relationships. The poet explains that he does this because these relationships frequently "cause pain." The speaker of the poem is so depressed that he hates all the different things associated with happiness such as laughter and loving.
