Callaway Golf Senior PGA Professional National Championship

Kicks Off Thursday at The PGA Golf Club

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., is set to welcome 264 senior PGA members for the Callaway Golf Senior PGA Professional National Championship, Oct. 19-22, 2006. The four-day stroke-play competition will be contested on the newly renovated and renamed Ryder and Wanamaker Courses (formerly the North and South Courses).

“I am anxious to see the advancements that have been made to the courses at The PGA Golf Club this summer,” said Jim White, the 2004 Champion and a PGA Master Professional at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb. “The new changes this year allows all the players to be in the same boat -- without any advantages of having played it before.”

Six past Champions are set to compete this year, including White; Jeff Thomson (2003), of Boise, Idaho; Wes Smith (1998), of Naples, Fla.; Bob Irving (1995), of Sarasota, Fla.; Roger Kennedy (1992, ’94), of Stuart, Fla.; and Tom Joyce (1990, ’91), of Huntington, N.Y. Mike San Filippo, of Hobe Sound, Fla., who won the Championship in 2005 and 2002, is not eligible to play this year, due to his new classification as a Tour Professional (A-3).

Eight of the Top-10 finishers from 2005 are returning with hopes of capturing their first Senior PGA Professional National Championship title. Leading the field are Darrell Kestner, of Glen Cove, N.Y., and Bob Ford, of Oakmont, Pa., who finished in second- and third-place respectively last year.

“After finishing in a tie for 47th place last year, I left the Championship with a bad taste in my mouth,” added White. “I am much more comfortable with my golf swing and my entire golf game this year, so I am looking forward to returning to this national Championship, and I am determined to improve on my finish last year.”

Following the first 36 holes of play, the 264-player field will be reduced to the low 70 players and ties. The winner of the Callaway Golf Senior PGA Professional National Championship will have his name inscribed on the Leo F. Fraser Trophy and also receive a first-place check for $20,000 -- out of a total purse of $285,000.

In addition, the Top-35 scorers will earn the right to compete in the 68th Senior PGA Championship at Kiawah Island (S.C.) Golf Resort, May 24-27, 2007. The Top-10 finishers will be exempt into the Champions Tour National Finals at TPC Eagle Trace, in Coral Springs, Fla., provided they have filled out an entry form by the tournament’s registration deadline. Finally, the Top-8 finishers, including ties, will be exempt into the 2007 Callaway Golf Senior PGA Professional National Championship.

Celebrating its 90th anniversary, The PGA of America was founded in 1916, and is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the game of golf, while continuing to enhance the standards of the profession. The Association is comprised of more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals who are dedicated to growing participation in the game of golf.
