Watch Yo Mouth
James 3: 1-12
Give 30 minutes of time to eat and fellowship. The “Span of Care” person should be ready to remind the group of any birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Celebrate these events during this time of food and fellowship.
1. Give announcements. Make sure you have a complete list of the upcoming church events.
2. During this time your secretary should record the names of the people attending (always contact those who aren’t in attendance in the next day after the meeting.)
3. Before starting the lesson, please start with prayer & a brief time of worship.
4. Start Lesson (Ideas: Funny Story relating to lesson, Leader personal testimony relating to lesson or Interesting facts or statistics relating to lesson
Scripture to read: Proverbs 18: 1-24; St Matthew 12: 31-37; Psalms 141:3.
St. Mat 12:34 “You offspring of vipers! How can you speak good things when you are evil (wicked)? For out of the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.” Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees when he said this but he made it clear in the last sentence that out of the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks, this goes for all mankind.
If we permit wrong thoughts to dwell in our minds, we will ultimately speak them out of our hearts. Whatever is hidden in our hearts will sooner or later be expressed openly through our mouths. Clearly our hearts are more than just a muscle that pumps blood through our bodies; it’s the innermost part of our being (carnally and spiritually).
We must use our mouths to call upon the name of the Lord to be saved. Romans 10:9&10 “Because if you acknowledge and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and in your heart believe that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” “For with the heart a person believes and so is justified, and with the mouth he confesses and confirms salvation.”
See how powerful the words that come out of your heart really are? Wow!
Questions:
1. Ask them to share a brief testimony of a negative conversation that they’ve had with anyone in the past? (please tell them not to mention names, church or relations).
2. Ask them, how did that person react when you said those hurtful words? Are you still friends with them?
3. If you had to do it all over again would you have said those negative things?
4. What kind of words can you or did you use to repair the damage caused by using those hurtful words?
5. Have you forgiven them? Read Mat 6:14-15.
Choose your words carefully because according to Matthew 12:36 you will have too give account for the things you say. Remember words are seeds; the seeds (words) carry good power or bad power. They can produce a good life or a bad life.
Pro 18: 21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it (for death or life).
What’s going on Inside of You
I encourage you to be that good person that encourages you’re friends, families and church members instead of using negative words to degrade them. You might be saying, I don’t say mean things to people. That’s good but, what are you saying about them on the inside?
Remember words are not only containers of power that you can fire OUT at other people but those inwardly words are destructive as well. These words that you speak inwardly bring on anger, depression and many other forms of sin. Stinkin’ Thinkin!!!
For example: when you’re angry at someone have you ever got into an argument with them when they weren’t even there?
Man, you really let them have it. There’s no one around but you say, I’ll show you, you think you’re better than everyone else. Well, let me tell you something Mister or Sister I’ll run circles around you! Bad words released inside (in our minds) of us are damaging to our lives as well.
You can go to the mental hospitals or just down the street and see people that are troubled inside. There’s a war going on inside of them.
Ask the group. If you know what you’re saying is wrong and the words that you’re speaking outwardly and inwardly are killing you, what should you do about it?
First, Surrender your heart to Christ if you haven’t already. If you’re saved already dive into God’s word and pray daily for those who bother you.
Second, is to ask the Holy Spirit to help you use good words and as you use good words towards others be wise and listen.
Third, ask God for strength to help you endure whatever they say (negative or positive) back to you. Just because you get right doesn’t mean the other person is going to get right and love you back. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you daily how to deal with strife.
Fourth, surround yourself with positive people.
Fifth, begin to use the gifts that God gave you and give back to others through your gifts. Become a part of the church body and never look back.
Lastly, Forgive, forgive & forgive.
None of us are perfect, it’s by His grace and mercy that we live and move today. Ask the group to raise the white flag (surrender). Leaders pray as the Spirit leads.
In closing ask for prayer requests (written down by the “Secretary” and emailed or texted to the group later) allow time for the Holy Spirit to speak to the group. Don’t rush but pray and worship in the spirit and watch the glory of the Lord shine.
***Lifegroup Leaders*** Please don’t forget to send a report of the meeting to Terry McCullah tdwain@ & Tim Jenkins tim.jenkins@go- .
