The Most Important Qualities of an Outstanding Educator

The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. -- William Arthur Ward

Throughout my adolescence I have had many different experiences with my own teachers, some positive and some negative. Both have influenced me in a variety of different ways to become an educator. I chose to major in education, hoping that I could one day make a positive difference in children's lives and be instrumental in fostering their development and growth. I still respect and remember those educators that made the strongest impact in my life through their approaches to teaching. They imparted many life changing lessons through their positive influences and ability to connect with children in the most meaningful ways. These teachers showed me how to be patient, loving and understanding; qualities that any great teacher should possess. I hope to eventually become that type of teacher; not only respected, but also a role model.

In order to become an outstanding educator and the role model that I want to be, I must implement and acquire all of the attributes and qualities an outstanding educator must possess. This kind of teacher must develop an effective network of relationships with his/her students, parents, and colleagues. Teachers that have strong, positive relationships and the ability to relate to and communicate with these groups will be trusted and respected for their professionalism.

A successful teacher is one with the ability to connect, recognize and know the differences in their student's learning styles to adjust, adapt lessons, communicate and teaching as necessary in order to effectively meet the individual needs of every child in their charge. To become an outstanding educator I would need to implement the use of differentiated instruction using a wide variety of instructional strategies for effective student learning. It is important to keep a student engaged and interested in what he/she is learning. Behavior problems can be minimized with engaging instruction and creating a climate where students are excited and actively involved in their own learning. By using this approach when teaching students the curriculum, the teacher produces in his or her students: enthusiasm for learning, interactive learning, inspiration, and individualized instruction. This approach generates a positive atmosphere for the students and the teacher by making the learning process interesting and creative where innovation, imagination and creative thinking are welcome.

It is so important for the teacher to be enthusiastic and engaged in the curriculum he/she is teaching just as much as the student. Without this, the atmosphere of the classroom will change and the excitement for learning will no longer be there. Therefore, to be an outstanding educator, a teacher needs to be there for his/her students in every aspect of everyday. A teacher is not only an educator; but is also a mentor, a compassionate listener and guide, and above all, a role model of integrity . These are qualities that any great teacher should possess.
