Create Your Own Business Project

As you know, college is expensive so you need to begin thinking about how to pay for it. You also may need a car to get you to and from college. You should begin thinking about ways you can earn money. A part-time job may be a first step for you. For this project, you will think of a skill or service that you could provide to the public as a part-time job. Then you will create a we Google Slide/PowerPoint presentation and two (2) of the following: flyers, signs, brochures, or business cards for your new business. Though these items do not need to be passed out to the public for this project, you may wish to use these if your parents and you decide a part-time job is a good idea for you. You will work in groups of 2-3-4

Thursday, February 7, 2019 – all materials will be collected

• Landscape maintenance (mow lawns, do weeds, install sprinklers, plant plants, trim bushes, pick up dog poop, rake, etc.)

• Website developer

• Computer training

• Graphic design (create logos, flyers, signs, etc.)

• Painter

• Dog walker

• Pet sitter

• Wash and groom pets

• House sitter

• Clean gutters

• Car detailing

• Tutoring

• Clean houses

• Lemonade stand/ice cream stand

• Handyman (or woman)

• Write articles for online websites like , , and

• Sell handmade items on

• Come up with your own idea and have it approved

SIGNS, FLYERS, AND DOOR HANGERS

Create a flyer that can be handed out or signs that can be posted in your neighborhood. Go online to Google images and search “business flyers templates” or “door hanger ideas” for suggestions. If you are going to post the flyers, you may consider having a tear-off portion with your business name and phone number. Here are some tips you may consider:

• Use a larger font for the name of your business

• Add a logo

• Put contact information (name, phone number, email address)

• Use a catchy slogan

• List your products/services

• Limit the amount of text on the page

• List your experience or special skills

• Print in color

BUSINESS CARDS

Create business cards that include some or all of the following: your business name, address, phone number, email address, logo, services provided, and slogan. List your name as owner. Visit to create your business cards in Microsoft Word. Print at least 1 pageVisit to help you create your logo.

BROCHURES

Create 2 sided brochures for your new business. You may consider including a coupon for first new customers. Visit for brochure templates using Microsoft Word. If you have Microsoft Publisher, there are templates that you can select that are very professional looking. Use the same tips found in the “Signs & Flyers” section above.

WEBSITE

Visit to create a free website for your business. If you are serious about starting this business, check with your parents to get permission to put your contact information online. For this project, however, you are not required to put your contact information. Write about your experience, special skills, services provided, why you are better than the competition, your prices, samples of your work, etc. Add pictures to make your website more visually appealing.
