CARIBBEAN FESTIVALS – JUNE 2014

ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA

ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA SPORT FISHING TOURNAMENT - JUNE 6th – 8th

This event will take place at Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua and Barbuda during the month of June. The best anglers from various countries will come together to compete against one another. On June 6th, a Marlin only tournament (which is one of the main highlights) will be held. This will be a fun event for patrons of all ages.



ARUBA

ARUBA BANK DAY WALK / RUN – JUNE 2nd - 6th

This event which is in its 10th year running will take place in the neighborhoods of Noord, Santa Cruz, San Nicolas and Camacuri in Aruba. The participants will start with a zumba warm-up which will be followed by the Walk and Run. It is be an atmosphere of camaraderie as the participants enjoy the views to be had along the terrains of Aruba.



THE BAHAMAS

PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL – JUNE 5th – 9th

This festival is held to celebrate the tradition of pineapple farming of the island of Eleuthera. Eleuthera, which is the fourth most populated island of the Bahamas is known for its endless pineapple fields along with its white to pink sand beaches. The event is used to promote the important agricultural heritage of the Bahamas. Visitors and residents alike enjoy pineapple-themed cooking and sporting events.



BARBADOS

DEACTION WATERMAN FESTIVAL – JUNE 7th – 9th

This festival which has been taking place since the year 2000 will celebrate the island’s rich beach culture. It will take place at Deaction Beach, Silver Sands, Barbados. Events will include windsurfing, surfing, kiteboarding, beach cricket, swimming and conch shell blowing. Professionals from around the world will be taking part in this event.



BELIZE

SAN PEDRO LOBSTER FESTIVAL - JUNE 14th – 22nd

This annual event in Belize celebrates the start of the Lobster season. There will be lots of entertainment such as art exhibitions, live shows and fire dancers. Many variations of lobster cuisine will also be available. This weeklong festival will include outdoor events and fine dining.



COLOMBIA

ANDEAN MONO NUNEZ MUSIC FESTIVAL – MAY 29th – JUNE 3rd

This is a musical festival held every year in the municipality of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The year 2014 will be the 39th edition of this festival and will attract hundreds of spectators. This event is a means promoting and facilitating the creation of Andean music in Colombia.



COSTA RICA

COSTA RICA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL - JUNE 5th – 8th

This festival serves as a destination for independent filmmakers and their fans. It will feature an array of short and feature films. Attendees will be treated to films, film discussions, cocktails, dinners and other events.



CUBA

CUCALAMBEANA DAY – JUNE 1st – 30th

This festival pays homage to Cuban country and indigenous music. It will take place in El Cornito Motel, which is the previous house of the formar king of country music Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo.



INTERNATIONAL BOLEROS DE ORO FESTIVAL – JUNE 1st – 30th

Bolero is a musical genre which emerged in Cuba in the second half of the 19th century. The festival which is organised by the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba was created by the Cuban composer and musicologist Jose Loyola in 1986 to pay homage to this genre of Cuban music. A lot of the performances take place at the Mella Theatre of Havana.



CURAÇAO

THE CURAÇAO COLOUR WALK – JUNE 1st

This is a fun 5k event. It is non-competitive and will promote physical activity, community and human expression. Participants will be sprinkled with colourful dust as they do the course. This walk which will be for charitable reasons will be held on June 1st and starts at 6:30am.



DOMINICA

DOMINICA JAZZ N’ CREOLE FESTIVAL – JUNE 8th

This festival will be held at Fort Shirley, Cabrits National Park, Dominica. Local regional and international artistes will partake in this extravaganza. Grammy award winning artiste Angelique Kidjo will headline the event.



DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

PUERTA PLATA CULTURAL FESTIVAL – 3rd week of June

During this festival, patrons are exposed to the Dominican culture as a whole. There will be a mix of jazz, meringue, folkloric music and so on. Many types of arts and crafts will be on display.

EL SALVADOR

FEAST DAY OF SAN PEDRO – JUNE 2014

This festival is held every during the last two weeks in June every year. It is held in honour of San Pedro, the local Patron Saint. This is the ideal setting for the variety of sports and cultural activities offered from traditional dances, exhibitions illustrating the continent prior to the Spanish invasion, to cycling and football tournaments. A procession is also held in honour of the patron saint.



FRENCH GUIANA

COMMEMORATION OF ABOLITION OF SLAVERY – JUNE 10th

Every year since 1981, citizens of French Guiana officially celebrate the abolition of slavery. It is celebrated on June 10th because on this date in 1848, the enslaved Africans were officially freed in the French colony. There will be dances and other cultural exhibitions to celebrate this important event in history.



GRENADA

PETITE MARTINIQUE WHITSUNTIDE REGATTA FESTIVAL – JUNE 6th

This festival is held on an annual basis on Grenada’s sister isle known as Petite Martinique. The event boasts of both water based and onshore activities. There will be tug-o-war, beer drinking competitions, swimming races, a greasy pole competition and lots more.



GUADELOUPE

TERRE DE BLUES FESTIVAL IN MARIE GALANTE – JUNE 6th – 9th

This is a music festival that has been taking place on the island of Marie Galante for the past 12 years. This blues fest attracts some of the biggest names of this musical genre from the French Caribbean, the United States and Africa.



GUATEMALA

DANCE OF THE GIANTS – JUNE 19th

The dance of the Giants and Big-Heads is a folkloric dance that takes place on Corpus Christi day in front of the cathedral in La Antigua, Guatemala. The giants or big-heads are usually hollow figures several meters tall, with a painted papier maché head and arms, the rest of the body being covered in cloth and other clothing. The frame is usually made of wood or aluminium. These figures are used to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.

HONDURAS JUNE FAIR – JUNE

This festival which is held in the city of San Pedro Sula brings much fun, happiness and joy to its participants. It is held in honour of the city’s patron saint (Apostle Pedro). It includes musical concerts, sporting events and cultural exhibitions.

JAMAICA

JAMAICA OCHORIOS JAZZ FESTIVAL –

This festival is a means of showcasing the musical talents of artistes from Jamaica and around the Caribbean. The year 2014 will be the 24th edition of this event where patrons are treated to jazz, reggae, calypso and R & B.



MARTINIQUE

FETE DE LA MUSIQUE - JUNE 21st

This festival is a celebration of the rich musical traditions that exist on the island of Martinique. Zouk music (which originated on the island of Martinique) will be one of the major highlights.

MEXICO

CORPUS CHRISTI – JUNE 13th – 22nd

This catholic festival is celebrated yearly in Mexico. In areas of Mexico such as Papantla, Veracruz pre-colonial practices traditions are done alongside traditional catholic prayers and practices during street processions.

NICARAGUA

FESTIVAL OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST – JUNE

This festival usually takes place for most of June. It is celebrated in a town called San Juan Bautista. This celebration includes much merriment and general good feelings. There are parades every weekend, beauty pageants, and other displays of Nicaraguan culture.



PANAMA

FESTIVAL OF CORPUS CHRISTI – JUNE 19th

Corpus Christi is a festival that is religious in nature. After religious services parishioners take to the streets to sing and pray. In Panama in particular, flowers form a carpet on the floor as the Eucharist (Body of Christ) is carried through the streets. Traditional Panamanian dances and songs are also a part of this street procession.



SINT MAARTEEN

COLOR REVOLUTION SINT MAARTEEN – MAY 29th – JUNE 1st

Color Revolution is the premiere event for Caribbean and International Fashion. Slated for May 29 - Jun 1 2014, this 4 day event will be a melting pot of fashion, commerce, networking, and fun



ST LUCIA

ST LUCIA’S ANNUAL FISHERMAN FEST – JUNE 29th

This is a thanksgiving celebration by the islands’ Fishermen. There are unique events taking place around the island simultaneously but all start with a church service and then may go into parties, lunches or other forms of entertainment.



ST KITTS AND NEVIS

ST KITTS MUSIC FESTIVAL – JUNE 26th – 28th

This is the biggest event on the island. This year’s music festival will include famous artistes such as Kelly Rowland, Deniece Williams and Beenie Man.



ST VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES

VINCY MAS – JUNE 27th – JULY 8th

Carnival in St Vincent and the Grenadines also known as “Vincy Mas” is a ten day extravagant event. Calypso music provides the correct atmosphere and creating the right climate for true excitement. This is a time for throwing away inhibitions and hang-ups to the wind and "freeing-up". The streets of Kingstown become a hive of activity buzzing with round the clock excitement.



SURINAME

ICT SUMMIT PARAMARIBO – JUNE 5th - 6th

VENEZUELA

FEAST OF JOHN THE BAPTIST – JUNE 24th

This is one of the most popular events that take place in the capital city Caracas every year. There is much dancing in the streets to the beat of African drums. It is a mix of catholic and pagan traditions.
