I came across the following little article, part of an ad from Canning Liturgical Arts. I thought it is one of those interesting bits of information about how Christians took something from the pagan world and adapted it to point to a deeper Christian meaning. Enjoy.

Solstice, Stories & Symbolism

"Light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it." - John 1:5

With the sun at its height, dispelling the darkness of the night, the Summer Solstice is the longest day of light. The Winter Solstice marks the return of the sun. From then on, the sun strengthens in heat and the days become longer. The Summer Solstice then celebrates the sun, its greatest strength, the lush vegetation of the green earth and marks the day the sun begins to wain and the days begin to shorten once again.

The turn of the Summer Solstice coincides in Christian culture with the birth of John the Baptist on June 24. John's birth, according to Luke's gospel, precedes by exactly six months the birth of Christ, which falls during the Winter Solstice. As John the Evangelist wrote in his gospel, "He [John the Baptist] was not that Light but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lights every man that comes into the world (John I:6-9)." John foreshadowed a greater prophet, one that brought light to the world, symbolically reflected in the solar calendar.

Speaking of summer, this Thursday we celebrate the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, a national holiday known for fireworks, trips to the pool, and tasty BBQ. However, the history behind the Fourth of July is a long one and it's important to celebrate the true meaning behind Independence Day and pay homage to America's quest for freedom. Here are some quotes that capture the true meaning of this day.

"You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4th, not with a pa-

rade of guns, tanks and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism." Erma Bombeck

"Independence Day: freedom has its life in the hearts, actions and spirit of men and so it

must be daily earned and refreshed--else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die." - Dwight D. Eisenhower

"It will be celebrated with pomp and parade, bonfires and illuminations from one end of

this continent to the other." - John Adams

"Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all! By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall." -

John Dickenson

"I believe in America because we have great dreams, and because we have the opportunity

to make those dreams come true." - Wendell L. Wilkie

"We on this continent should never forget that men first crossed the Atlantic not to find

soil for their ploughs, but to secure liberty for their souls." - Robert J. McCracken

"So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring

from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania. Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado. Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California. But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia. Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee. Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

My hope is that you have the opportunity to enjoy family and friends for the holiday. You are in my daily thoughts and prayers. May God bless you with the best.

Always in the Savior, Fr. Joe
