HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, FATHER WILSON!

This Wednesday, September 16, Father Cedric Wilson celebrates the 42nd anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood.

Father Wilson has been in residence for two months here at Good Shepherd, and we are grateful for his ministry!

As many already know, Father Wilson is a full-time professor of Psychology at Northern Virginia Community College. He also assists other parishes in our diocese, especially in ministry to Spanish-speaking parishioners.

What many may not know is that Father Wilson is not a diocesan priest; he is a member of the Order of St. Augustine, or Augustinians, a religious order of priests and brothers who serve, among other places, at Villanova University. This means that in addition to his priestly ordination, Father Wilson has also made a public profession of the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience in his religious community.

We offer Father Wilson a traditional Latin blessing on the occasion of this anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood ? ad multos annos! ? may you have many years of joyful service to God and His Church!

Como muchos lo sabr?n, el Padre Wilson es un profesor de Sicolog?a de tiempo completo en Northern Virginia Community College. Tambi?n asiste a otras parroquias de nuestra di?cesis, especialmente a nuestros feligreses de habla hispana.

Lo que quiz?s muchos no lo saben es que el Padre Wilson no es un sacerdote diocesano; sino un miembro de la Orden de San Agust?n, o los Agustinos, una orden religiosa de sacerdotes y hermanos que sirven entre otros lugares, en la Universidad de Villanova. Esto quiere decir que adem?s de su ordenaci?n sacerdotal, el Padre Wilson tambi?n ha hecho una profesi?n p?blica de los votos de pobreza, castidad y obediencia en su comunidad religiosa.

This weekend is our Annual Faith Formation collection. Our 2020 PreK-12 program is home-centered and relies on students' use of technology to attend virtual meetings and on-line resources. Your donation will directly benefit families who need support accessing the necessary technology.

Our lifelong Faith Formation programs continue this Fall. In addition to our PreK-12 program which begins on September 20, we will have other offerings for all ages. SEASON OF CREATION

September 1 ? October 4: Jubilee for the Earth The theme for this year's Season of Creation is "Jubilee". According to Leviticus, during a Jubilee year the land was allowed to rest. There was no sowing or systematic gathering of food. People lived simply and ate old stores or whatever grew spontaneously, so the land could regenerate. Today food production is the #2 cause of greenhouse gasses right behind the use of fossil fuels for energy. A meat centric diet is especially hard on the earth. If cattle were their own nation they would be the world's 3rd largest emitter of greenhouse gasses. Food waste is another major factor. One third of the food raised today does not make it from farm or factory to fork. In the US, food is often rejected because of minor imperfections or wasted by ordering or preparing too much. What can we do? Resolve to live more simply by adopting a plant rich diet and eating up leftovers. Complete protein can be obtained from beans and rice, quinoa, or peanut butter on whole wheat bread. DONATE CLEANING SUPPLIES AND FOOD

Bring donations to the collection box in the Commons. Help neighbors in need with donations that enable families to successfully self-isolate and quarantine during the pandemic. Especially needed: masks, cleaning supplies, sanitary wipes, laundry detergent, household cleaners, disinfectants, toilet paper and paper towels, large kitchen trash bags, personal hygiene items. Good Shepherd also accepts food donations every week in the Sharing Sunday bin. Most-needed items include canned meats, pasta, rice, cooking oils, cereal. Donations received in 3rd and 4th weeks go to St. Lucy's Project. Donations received in 1rst and 2nd weeks go to United Community. (NOTE: donations of clothing or household goods are not accepted.)
