Cold Medications during PregnancyWomen frequently have questions about what medications can be taken during pregnancy. Other generic ingredients that may be used to reduce the symptoms of cold or cough are Phenylephrine (helps dry a stuffy nose) and Guonefisin (helps break up mucous). Dextromethophen is a generic ingredient used in cough suppressants and may safely be used during pregnancy. Try a saline spray like Ocean Nasal Mist for stuffy nose. Avoid nose sprays or drops like Afrin which contain a medication that can cause rebound stuffy nose (meaning the stuffiness gets worse when you stop the medication) and may increase your blood pressure. Try a lozenge or cough drop for sore throat.
