You will select and research a human disease that is either caused by an infection or an immune system disorder.

Diseases that fall in these categories include, but are not limited to the following:

Infectious Diseases Immune System Disorders

Examples of diseases that are very interesting, but would probably not qualify for this assignment include breast cancer, type II diabetes, hypertension, and color blindness. However if you want to do a pamphlet on gangrene infections in diabetic patients, it could be appropriate. Please check with your instructor to verify that the disease you select is appropriate before you start your project.

Once you have checked with your instructor, you need to gather at least three to five sources of information on the disease you have chosen. At least one reference should be from a non-internet source and another from an internet source.

Brochure Guidelines: You will develop a two-sided 3-fold brochure or pamphlet on a single sheet of paper (8.5 x 11 inch) with six possible columns of information. If you are using Microsoft Word you can select from various brochure formats available when you open a new document. Your brochure should be targeted to a patient that has just learned that s/he or a family member has this disease.

Organize your brochure into three basic parts:

Brochure Cover (5 points): Should include the name of the disease, at least one illustration or picture, your name, college name, your class section number, and the semester and year (e.g. Spring, 2018). You want your pamphlet cover to catch the reader’s attention, so make your graphics and text creative and relevant to the topic you are covering.

Body of Brochure (35 points): You should try to provide comprehensive information on the disease using your own words. Do not cut and paste someone else’s brochure you find on the internet. You can use your own format, but the information you provide should attempt to answer the following questions as completely as possible:

• Etiology: What is the cause of the disease?

• Diagnostics: How is the disease diagnosed?

• Epidemiology: Disease prevalence and/or incidence. Who is more likely to get it? Discuss known risk factors.

• Symptoms and signs

• Complications

• Treatment and/or cure

• Prevention

• Prognosis

• Any other relevant information: History of the disease, current research, medication availability, vaccine development, or side effects, etc.

Back of Brochure (9 points):

• Provide resources for patients with the disease such as: existing foundations, government websites, or local support groups

• List all of the references you used for this project in APA format. You need a minimum of three sources. Use at least one internet and one non-internet source.

Grading:

This assignment is worth 50 points: cover (5) + body (35) + back (9) + topic (1).

You will be graded based on the following criteria:

• Visual presentation, design and creativity of your brochure

• Accuracy of information presented

• Clarity of information presented

• Relevance of information presented

• Coverage of topic: Is information complete?

• Conciseness of writing and use of language

• Sources of information provided

• Following written instructions for brochure
