SmithMontgomery County teen-agers are reading more than ever before. In October, the juvenile circulation was 26, 610 books.A survey of their reading habits, made during the 42nd observance of National Children’s Book Week last week, showed biography, books about horses, puzzle and joke books, and many of the classics were favorites of this county’s teen-agers.Mrs. Tommie C. Greene, county librarian, said books on horses cannot be bought. Author Walter Farley continues to bring out new titles but they are not nearly enough of his books on horses and those by other authors to feed their insatiable appetite. She also says book of puzzles and jokes are in such demand that the book cannot afford to renew them.Biographies from the Childhood of America series about famous men to life stories of adults are popular, with baseball players, Indians chiefs and western characters the favorites.According to Mrs. Greene, many of the classics retain their popularity, as shown by how often the youngsters check out Little Women, Ramona, Heidi, the Penrod books, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and Gone With The Wind. The last three, she said, are never on the shelf, though the bookmobile has several copies of each. She points out that the usual difference in taste between the sexes exists. Boys asked for hot rod stories such as Thunder Road and Drag Strip, aviation stories, science fiction, and sports stories. Girls lean toward romance and title such as Double Date, April Wedding and Going On Sixteen. Vocational stories are popular, whether about fashion models, journalists, or nurses, the last being the most popular of all. They choose poetry, fairy tales, and juvenile mysteries. Adults read by some of the better teen-age readers are the James Street novels.Factual stories about airplanes, space or war on land or sea are meat for boy. While it is true that many juveniles buy on the funny book level where they have the bookmobile and its wide selection to choose from, they are eager to choose as many books as they are permitted to check out at one time. Many bring written requests from their parents or teachers for permission to check out more books than ordinarily permitted, and the requests are granted under this condition. The idea of Children’s Book Week originated with Franklin Mathiew, chief librarian for the Boy Scouts of America. The slogan for this year was “Hooray For Book.” MONDAYPine Level 4-H Club will meet at 10:30 a.m. at Pine Level School.Ramer Senior 4-H Club will meet at 9 a.m.at Montgomery County High School.TUESDAYPinedale Civic Club will have a covered dish supper and installation of new officers at 7 p.m. at the clubhouse.Pine Level WMS will meet at 3 p.m.Ramer Civic Club will meet at 3 p.m at the home of Mrs. W.G. SmithL.R. ‘Daddy’ Grimes, veteran member of the Board of Revenue, who completed his 36th year Nov. 14, and started another term, will observe still another anniversary Thursday. He and Mrs. Grimes will complete their 50th year of marriage and embark on their 51st.No celebration is planned, just a day at home and dinner out in the evening. But it is safe to say it will not be a quiet day. Friends with words of congratulations will see to that. The courthouse will close for the holidays one day too early for the Grimes anniversary, so Daddy will not be able to make his daily visit to the Board of Revenue. There also will be something else different about this Christmas for Mr. and Mrs. Grimes. It will be the first for them to spend at home in many years; in fact Daddy does not even remember when they did not go to see his son in Houston, Tx. or Mrs. Grimes’ three sisters in Miami at Christmas time.A native of Georgia, Daddy Grimes has become part of the warp and woof of Montgomery County since he came here to live in 1909. He was elected to the Board of Revenue in 1924 and has served as president three terms. He is a charter member of the Alabama Association of County Commissioners, attends all the meetings, knows everybody, and has a keen interest in all people and things connected with county government. His great ambition to see a new courthouse for Montgomery was realized two years ago, and the day it was opened was one of the happiest of his life.Mrs. Grimes was a Georgia girl, Blanche Holden of White Plains. They were married December 22 and in addition to their son, Luther Reid Grimes, Jr., they have a daughter, Annie, wife of Col. E.W. McLain of Honolulu.Daddy has fished in every water hole in Montgomery County and having the luck of the Irish, always brings home a good catch. He’s also keen on hunting, but whether his hunting luck is as good as his fishing, this column would not know.At 84, he dances every set at social functions, and his posture is the envy of every person in town. With the new goatee his growing for the Civil War Centennial Commemoration, this column ventures that he will look just like a character stepping out of the history books.Montgomery County NewsDecember 26, 1960Cheerful Holiday Season, Choicest Blessing WishedBy Mildred B. SmithIf this column could have Santa Claus Saturday night, checks would have been put in the stockings of Methodist Church, Snowdoun Methodist Church and Sampey Memorial Baptist Church in Ramer to wipe out the loans they made to finance new building project…An avalanche of seed for testing from farmers and nurserymen would have been poured into the laboratory of Miss Marion Viccars, Mt. Meigs Road seed analyst, who could tell them whether the see would germinate profitably…New eyes would have been brought to Mrs. C.E. Rushing, retired school teacher of Dublin, who lost her sight several years ago.The health of Herbert McClendon, Advertiser advertizing salesman, who has been at Veterans Hospital for many weeks, would have been completely restored (he is spending the holidays with his daughter at 1546 Saulter Road, Birmingham 9, Ala.)…The 4-H club reporters of this county would have received extra blessing for the fine job of reporting they are doing…And the same kind of blessing would have gone to the civic club reporters for their faithful jobs.Remembering that good friends and good neighbors are the choicest blessing one can have, this column wishes a cheerful holiday season and a new year full of the best of everything to the following who sent Christmas cards:OUT OF STATE: Mrs. Alice Buthorn, Mr. and Mrs. Neilson B. Thompkins, Fitzpatrick.A watershed project, such as the one proposed for the Line Creek area, is planned to conserve, develop, use and dispose of water in such a manner as to preserve and protect the land and water resources of the area involved. The boundaries of the proposed Line Creek Watershed Conservancy District will be the area of the Line Creek Watershed and its tributaries within Montgomery, Bullock and Macon counties, more particularly described as the watershed area of Line Creek, Town Creek, Bughall Creek, Coleman Creek, Panther Creek, McDowell-Johnson Creek and their tributaries.A Soil Conservation Service economist and an engineer spent week in this area and came to the conclusion that a watershed project was feasible and needed. It is now up to the local people, they say, to decide if they want to go any further with the project by voting for or against the creation of a watershed conservancy district within the watershed area.MONDAYLaPine WSCS will meet at 7:30p.m.The official board meeting of Hope Hull Methodist Church will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the church.Pintlala Older Girls 4-H Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Florrie Hubbard. The annual Alabama Christian College Brotherhood dinner will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Jefferson Davis Hotel.TUESDAYSnowdoun Men’s Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. at Snowdoun Clubhouse with Atty.
