|POST INFORMATION |

|The Department |The department is part of the Surgical & Anaesthetic Directorate and provides anaesthetic services within the 12 theatre |

| |operating suite, which is located on the 2nd floor. |

| | |

| |There is a modern 12 bedded Adult Critical Care Unit (ACCU) adjacent to the theatre suite which is the responsibility of |

| |the Anaesthetic department. Broadly, these are currently funded to permit 5 level 3 and 7 surgical level 2 beds. There is |

| |an additional 12 bedded medical level 2 facility within the hospital. All major forms of organ support are provided. |

| | |

| |There are currently 6 consultants with a commitment to ICM who undertake whole weeks of daytime service provision. This |

| |has improved continuity of care and has been welcomed by all within the multidisciplinary team. Our goal, ultimately, is |

| |to develop a stand-alone consultant rota for ICM. |

| |The ACCU is staffed at night by a resident trainee or specialty doctor with consultant cover from the whole department. |

| |NHS Lanarkshire has committed to the development of Advanced Nurse Practitioners in Critical Care to enhance the critical |

| |care team. |

| | |

| |We provide a rolling in-house programme of postgraduate ICM teaching and there are weekly MDT meetings in the Department |

| |which are coupled with an educational/development forum. We have close links with the other 2 ICUs within NHS Lanarkshire,|

| |and there are monthly regional forums via teleconference. |

| | |

| |We are fully engaged with the Scottish Patient Safety Programme and have appointed a dedicated Infection Surveillance |

| |Nurse to that end. |

| | |

| |The obstetric unit is staffed mainly by those with a special interest in obstetric anaesthesia. Presently, cover at night |

| |is provided by a resident SAS or trainee with consultant cover or a resident consultant who is also the anaesthetic senior|

| |decision maker. |

| | |

| |The majority of our patients are admitted on the day of surgery and we are expanding the type of cases we can do as day |

| |cases. We are also actively embracing the ERAS concept and this is developing across several specialties. Virtually all |

| |our elective patients are seen pre-operatively by an excellent pre-assessment service. |

| | |

| | |

| | |

| | |

| | |

| | |

| |(Continued over) |

| |A well developed interest in obstetric anaesthesia is essential and we wish to recruit enthusiastic doctors who will be |

| |committed to quality improvement in this area. The obstetric unit is the 4th largest in Scotland with approximately 5500 |

| |deliveries per annum. It runs as a well developed LDRP system for deliveries allowing these across 3 adjacent wards. We |

| |have embraced recent advances in Obstetric Anaesthesia and use both Patient Controlled Epidural Analgesia and remifentanil|

| |PCA for labour analgesia. We also run a dedicated high risk obstetric anaesthesia clinic and have the availability of both|

| |cell salvage and interventional radiology for high risk cases. Trainees from the West of Scotland School of Anaesthesia |

| |rotate through the unit for obstetric anaesthesia training. |

| |Based at Wishaw Hospital this job will provide daytime elective cover and out of hours’ resident cover to primarily |

| |maternity and critical care services. |

| |The post is based on a 10 session contract. The appointee will be expected to provide resident Anaesthetic cover to the |

| |Maternity unit and the Intensive Care unit at Wishaw. |

| | |

| |There are 2 types of rota. |

| |Obstetric Anaesthetic Rota: The resident cover expected is one late shift per week (17:00h – 21:00h) usually on a Tuesday.|

| |The successful applicant will work 1 in 7 weekends 8:30h – 21:00h (Saturday and Sunday) as resident anaesthetist for the |

| |Maternity Unit. In addition 10 resident maternity nights (20:30h – 21:00h) per year will be delivered flexibly according |

| |to service requirements. This component of the job plan will account for 4 DCCs. |

| | |

| |ICU-Rota: Every two weeks one night (20:30h – 9:00h) of resident ICU cover will be provided. This will usually be a |

| |Wednesday night. This component of the job plan will account for 2 DCCs. |

| | |

| |In addition the appointee will be required to provide an average of 2 elective theatre sessions per week. There is an |

|The Post |allowance of 1 session for pre / post op care and other patient related activities. 1 PA is allocated for supporting |

| |professional activities. |

| | |

| |You will be expected to comply with Royal College of Anaesthetists recommendations on continuing medical education. You |

| |will be accountable to the Clinical Director of Anaesthetics, Theatres and Critical Care. |

| | |

| |Continued personal development is seen as essential for these roles and support will be given to individuals wishing to |

| |undertake activities such as audit. |

| |The post is offered as 10 PAs. A further 2 PAS may be available by mutual agreement. Night duty hours are 20:00-08:00. 1 |

| |of the PAs is allocated for peri-operative care to enable theatres to start promptly at 09:00 and to allow for occasional |

| |over-runs. |

| |The exact configuration of sessions will be determined following appointment when a job plan will be issued as part of the|

| |contract. |

|DECLARATIONS/CONVICTIONS STATEMENT |

| |

|The following should be used when completing DECLARATIONS/ CONVICTIONS within the application pack. |

| |

|Registration with the General Medical Council or General Dental Council imposes on doctors and dentists the duty to provide a good standard of |

|medical care and to behave appropriately, towards patients. NHS Employees also have a duty to ensure that patients receive a good standard of |

|medical care and ensure as far as possible the safety of patients. We therefore need to establish if you have been found guilty of a criminal |

|offence, been bound over or cautioned or are currently the subject of proceedings which might lead to a conviction, an order binding you over or a |

|caution, in the UK or any other country. |

| |

|Applications for posts in the NHS are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Application forms will include a declaration for |

|applicants to complete declaring any previous or pending prosecutions or convictions, including those considered “spent” under the Act. Forms will |

|also include a declaration of any cautions or bind overs. |

| |

|We also need to establish if you have been the subject of any fitness to practise proceedings in the past, or if any fitness to practise proceedings|

|are being contemplated, by a licensing or regulatory body in the UK or another country and this is also reflected in the declaration. |

| |

|This information will be treated in confidence and will not debar you from appointment unless the selection panel considers that it renders you |

|unsuitable for appointment. In reaching such a decision we will consider the nature of the conviction/action, how long ago it took place and any |

|other factors which may be relevant |

| |

|Failure to disclose a criminal offence, having been bound over or cautioned or that you are currently the subject of criminal proceedings, which |

|might lead to a conviction, an order binding you over a caution, or fitness to practice proceedings undertaken or being undertaken by an appropriate|

|licensing or regulatory body, may disqualify you from appointment, or result in summary dismissal/disciplinary action and referral to the General |

|Medical Council (General Dental Council) for consideration if such a discrepancy came to light. |

|If you would like to discuss what effect any previous convictions, police investigations or fitness to practice proceedings taken or being taken |

|either in the UK or by an overseas licensing or regulatory body might have on your application, you may telephone: Marlene Fraser (01698) 377752 in |

|confidence, for advice. |

|IMMIGRATION |

|Overseas Doctors and Dentists |For the purpose of immigration status, overseas doctors and dentists are those who, regardless of where they obtain |

| |their primary medical/dental qualification, are not nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA). A list of EEA |

| |countries is attached. |

|Changes to Immigration |On 7th March 2006 the Department of Health announced changes to the immigration rules for postgraduate doctors and |

| |dentists. The changes came into effect on 3rd April 2006 and mean that all doctors and dentists who wish to work in |

| |the UK from outside the EEA will need to meet the requirements of an employment category such as the work permit |

| |provisions. New applications for permit-free training visas will no longer be granted for doctors undertaking |

| |training posts |

|Impact of Change |Non-EEA doctors and dentists will still be able to come and train in the UK and are still eligible to apply, in open |

| |competition for training posts provided all the other eligibility criteria is met. However, training posts will now |

| |be considered employment for immigration purposes. Work permits will only be issued where there is a specific post |

| |for the overseas doctors that cannot be filled by someone from the EEA. |

|Further Information |The changes in immigration requirements for trainee doctors and dentists are a result of a Scottish Executive Health |

| |Department announcement and immigration issues are the remit of the Home Office. Clarification and further |

| |information can be accessed from the following:- |
