Performing Arts Binding Instructions

Last updated on 6/2/2008 Amanda Evans

General Guidelines:

• Currently we only bind scores, not books (ML & MT) unless they are in poor condition.

• Commercial pamphlet bind scores as much as possible.

For Materials in good condition:

Pam Binding Instructions – use for all music scores that fit size specifications and are a single signature, pamphlets, and small booklets that can be sewn into binding

1. “Please pam bind in-house” (use only for rush items for Blossom Music summer program) – total thickness of score/parts can be no more that ½ inch.

2. “Please commercial pam bind”

Size Restrictions:

a. Width – up to 10 inches

b. Height – up to 12 inches

c. Thickness – at least 1/8 inch and no more that ¾ inch.

Hard binding instructions – use for all circulating scores (or scores + parts) and non-circulating scores that are too large to be pam bound, are made up of multiple signatures, or arrived from publisher/distributor with spiral binding.

1. “Please bind score (instrument name) + ___ parts”

a. For parts that are made up of pages that are seamed together and are on one large sheet of paper that is folded up to the size of 1 page or are on a single sheet of paper, give these instructions – “tip-in or tape on left edge only” (also print an arrow on the note pointing to the edge to be taped and attach note to top left edge of page

2. “Please pocket case”

a. This instruction is perfect for scores and/or sets of parts that exceed ¾ inch because this will give you a score that has been hard bound with the normal part binding all in a pocket inside a hard bound cover with Velcro holding it shut – for an example see M985.E93 W4 2002 (record # : b28731323).

For Materials in poor condition:

1. “Please phase Box” – used for brittle/rare materials that are too large for the “Pam binder with flaps”

2. “Please make a pam binder with flaps” – used for brittle/rare materials that should not be bound but are not big enough for phase boxes

***For rare/special items (both Phase boxed and Pam binder with flaps) - Add instructions when you do not want the bindery to put barcodes, labels, stamps, or stickers on the physical items. They can put all labels, barcodes, stickers and stamps on the pam binder or phase box.

Miscellaneous Instructions

Spiral Bound Scores

Single Sheets and Fold Outs (parts)

Include instructions on sticky notes for parts that are printed on a single sheet of paper that is not folded – “Please tape on left edge only” with an arrow pointing left.
