Sentence Structure

This is a summary of the five different activities for DLC Request on Sentence Structure.

1. Sentence Combining: Worksheet on sentence combining with Answer Key, along with ideas on how to extend the activity.

a. Time Required: About one class period.

2. Restructuring Sentences: A short activity on restructuring sentences.

a. Time Required: 15-20 min.

3. Sentence Scramble: Students unscramble sentences so that they make sense grammatically.

a. Time Required: One class period.

4. Sentence Scramble II: An adaptation of Sentence Scramble that emphasizes the parts of speech. The words of a sentence (written on index cards) are passed around the classroom. Card-holding students form the sentence at the front of the class, while the teacher guides the class in labeling the parts of speech of the sentence.

a. Time Required: One class period.

5. Other Exercises: Two worksheets for practice with (1) Independent Clauses and (2) Parallel Structure.
