ACTIVITIES FOR FACILITATING SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SKILLS THAT CAN BE USED DURING HOME ROUTINES

READING- This is an excellent method to facilitate turn taking (pointing to pictures/words) and the ability to answer and ask questions. The caretaker can speak dramatically, exaggerate, and emphasize characters voices. The child can be asked to fill in the blanks/missing information or find words that rhyme.

BATH TIME ROUTINES- This can be a time to talk about in/out, different body parts (use with music- This is the way we wash your ___), adjectives/opposites (soapy, slippery, wet, dry, clean, dirty).

DINNER ROUTINES- This can be used to promote one to one correspondence (place setting), counting (plates, cups, silverware), requesting items, and sharing.

DRESSING ROUTINES- This can be used to promote matching, identification of body parts/clothing, counting, describing clothing (color, designs), encoding locations (under, over, on top), identifying same or different (pairs of socks), and sequencing.

LAUNDRY ROUTINES- This can help facilitate sorting, matching, identifying same/different, counting, more/less, location words, and sizes (big, small).

DRIVING/TRIPS- This can provide opportunities to sequence, name/identify items (traffic signs), count, categorize (trucks, cars, airplane), identify same/different, describe (shapes and colors of surroundings), and recall information (what you have just seen).
