Value Tags Assessment

Your values are the things that are most important to you. They are the principles, standards, and qualities you consider worthwhile or desirable. They guide your actions and decisions on a daily basis. If you notice that something isn’t quite right in your life, a lot of times it’s due to a conflict in your values. Your values have a lot of influence on your relationships, your behaviors, your choices, and your personal identity; it’s important to know and understand them in order to live a more fulfilling life! Note: As you identify your values, make sure that you are choosing the most important values in your life right now, not things that you think are important or what you would like to have in the future.

The Value Tags exercise will have you identify the things that are most important in your life RIGHT NOW! They could be things that are important that you “live” on a daily basis – or they may be things that are important, but you don’t actually follow (but would truly like to). Instructions are listed below:

1. Make sure that you have 36 tags.

2. Make two piles of values:

a. Pile 1: Those values that are important in your life right now.

b. Pile 2: Those values that are not important in your life right now.

3. Put aside your pile of values not important (Pile 2).

4. If a few people finish quickly, have them count the number of values chosen as important in Pile 1 (the higher the number, the more difficult Step 6 will be – but don’t tell them that).

5. Now, working with the pile of values deemed important (Pile 1), narrow down this pile to your top 10 – your 10 MORE important values. These are the 10 values you deem most important in your life right now.

6. Once you are done and have identified your 10 most important, rank order these 10, making sure that the #1 value is the MOST IMPORTANT value – the one that you can’t live without, the one that you will not compromise under any circumstance. Continue this same process with values 2 through 10, making sure to rank order them from #1 through #10.

7. Once you have your ten, use the accompanying index card to put your name and today’s date on the top line of the lined side of the index card.

8. Also on the lined side of your card, write down your list of your ranked top 10 values, from #1 to #10.

9. On the blank side of the index card, briefly answer the following questions:

a. What was at least one interesting thing about your list of ten values? Any surprises?

b. How do your values come into play for you on a daily basis – either in a positive or a negative way?

c. What is/are the biggest challenges of living your values?

d. Do you see a connection between your values and the things you could see yourself doing (your work, your relationships, etc.) in the future?

10. Note: If time allows, have students share their top 10 values with their fellow students in class and/or the questions listed in step 9 above.

Value Tags Results

After sorting through the 36 Value Tags, list (and try to rank order) your top Ten Most Important Values – the things that are MOST important to you right now.

Talents and Gifts

The first part tin developing your meaningful work statement is to identify your talents and gifts. These are the things that you are both good at and you enjoy doing. Circle, highlight, or place a check next to all that apply to you, then narrow down to a minimum of five (5) and a maximum of ten (10) that fit you best. Make sure you choose only those things that you’re good at doing AND things that you like to do! Note: If something is not listed, feel free to add it to your list!

Meaningful Work

Your Meaningful Work Statement describes the area you'd like to work in, the people you'd like to help, and the best way for you to do this work. As you create your statement, think about how others will benefit from your meaningful work. As you create your statement, think about the work that you believe would resonate with you best, even if you have an interest in many different areas, want to work with many different groups, and/or help in many different ways. “Where the needs of the world and your talents cross, therein lies your vocation.” - Aristotle

Interests

Your interests are the things that you’re interested in, things that you’re passionate about, problems you’d like to solve, things that make you angry, or things that drive you crazy. For this part of the exercise, choose up to ten words. Note: If there are words that are not listed that you’re interested in, add them to your list.

Government/Politics Business Entrepreneurship Animals/Pets

Farming/Agriculture History Sciences Medicine/Medical Care Design

Toys/Games Clothing/Fashion Writing/Publishing Disabilities

Beauty Languages Hotels/Event Planning Cars/Driving

Safety/Security Entertainment Environment/Nature Humor

Aviation/Flying Marketing/Sales Furniture/Antiques Math

Landscape Gender Issues Theater/Acting Plants/Flowers

Self-Help/Personal Growth Social Media Books Cooking

Recreation/Outdoors Forensics/Death Health Sexuality

Television/Movies/Film Photography Weather

Audience

Your audience are the people/groups you’d like to help, those you could see yourself working with, or those that you could see benefiting from what you could share. For this part of the exercise, choose up to ten words. Note: If there are people/groups that are not listed that you’d like to be involved with, add them to your list.

Business Owners Entrepreneurs Athletes

Young Children Communities/Neighborhoods Deaf/Hearing Impaired

Special Needs (Mentally, Physically) Disaster Victims High School Students

Creative People Infants/Babies College Students

K-12 Education (Teachers, Staff) Blind/Visually Impaired High Level Executives

Specific Ethnic/Racial Groups Higher Education Poverty/Rural Areas

“Do-It-Yourself” (DIY) People Religious Organizations Mothers/Fathers

People in Emotional Crisis Elderly/Seniors Females/Males

Gangs/Gang Members Homeless People Farmers

Pregnant Teens/Adults Unhealthy People Orphans/Runaways

Physically Abused Artists/Performers Immigrants

LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Allied) Prisoners

Veterans/Military Marriages Single People

Adults

After you've come up with your interests, your audience, and your action, it’s time to come up with the ONE sentence that sums up what you'd like to do, who you'd like to help, and how you plan to help them - your meaningful work. Your statement may also include how your audience will benefit from your meaningful work. Remember that your statement must be just ONE sentence - but it can be a really long one!

Meaningful Work Sentence Template

Use the following template to create your statement:

• I will use my talents/gifts in (talents and gifts) and my interests in (interests) to help/serve (audience) so that they/in order for them to (achieve some benefit, achieve some level of success, overcome some obstacle, make a chance in their life, etc.).

And if you can’t use the template above, just complete the following statement:

• My meaningful work…

Use the space below to describe your meaningful work IN ONE SENTENCE, based on the information from the previous exercises, the table on the previous page and using the sentence starters above:

Meaningful Work Statement Quiz

1. __________ 2. __________ 3. __________ 4. __________ 5. __________ 6. __________

Take a minute to reflect on your answers. If you have any “No” answers, use the space below to share why your answer(s) are a “No.” What needs to happen in order for you to engage in your meaningful work on a regular basis?

Desired Feelings

Imagine what your life would be like if your values, work, goals, and dreams were based on your deepest feelings – the things that really drive you on a daily basis. Use the list on the next two pages to pick words that describe how you want to FEEL in your life – in your work, in your play, as you start each day. Take time to not only pick words that seem to fit best with you; pick words that resonate with you at the deepest levels of your soul. So deep, that they may even evoke some type of strong, positive emotion in you when you see them, hear them, feel them! To help you choose your best words, use the sentence "I want to feel __________ today (or every day)!" to help you decide if a word should make your list or not. Once chosen, take a few seconds to ask yourself why this word should be on your list. Note: If a word is not listed here that you'd like to use, feel free to list it among your choices.

Desired Dream List

Your Desired Dream List identifies the things you’d like experience at some point in your life. Your Dream List should be about those experiences you’d like to have – now and in the future, based on your Desired Feelings. Use the categories and examples below to identify a few of the things that you’d like to be, do, or have that are really important to you. For this exercise, you will need to come up with at least TWO items for each of the nine different categories; more are always welcomed! Make sure to be as specific as possible; for example, instead of writing, “Be a better person,” write something more specific, such as “spend at least once day a week with my parents” or “volunteer at homeless shelter once a week.” Remember, this is YOUR Desired Dream List, not a list of things that others want you to achieve. Note: Share your list with others; you may find that others have the same dream and you can work together to complete it! Better yet – steal the dreams of others if you like it!
