2019 Scholarship BiosValerie Weiss AwardsIngrid Anderson is pursuing her Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) master’s degree at Gonzaga University. She has a special interest in helping front line service professionals address secondary trauma and take charge of their own mental health needs. She has certainly come a long way from dropping out of high school and being told by a nursing advisor to find another profession! Teresita Barrera is on her way to earning her DNP at Seattle University specializing in Family Psychiatry. She aspires to practice psychiatry as an innovative leader dedicated to breaking down barriers and promoting mental health awareness in the Latinx community. She is particularly intrigued by how neurobiology relates to mental health and how the body processes trauma. Nicholas Davies?is attending Yale School of Nursing?in their graduate program. His passion for preventive care was born out of his experiences in the back of ambulances, at HIV clinics, in research labs, and with rural Cambodian health centers. Nicholas is a strong advocate for immigrants, refugees and health equity. We are so lucky that he plans to bring his talents back to the King County community after graduation!Lisa Delvalle?is in the master’s program at the University of Washington Tacoma in their education track. Lisa is passionate about creating a curriculum that teaches nursing students about end of life issues as well as early symptom management.Ambera Dedic started her journey in nursing education in 2011 as a senior in high school without enough credits to graduate. Today she is well on her way to her DNP degree from Seattle University. Beginning life as a refugee from the mountains surrounding Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ambera’s early life provides her with a high level of compassion for her patients and students. She intends to dedicate her life to promoting education and awareness of the value of inclusiveness and acceptance of unique cultural backgrounds in Nursing practice. Lilibeth Falaminiano came to the United States from the Philippines with only $20 in her pocket and a heart full of dreams, becoming the first in her family to earn a college degree. Today she is working towards her DNP from the University of Washington, specializing in Acute Care of Adults and Gerontology. She believes that palliative care is significantly underutilized and is dedicated to introducing it early and as an option in a variety of situations. She is also a strong advocate for marginalized populations, especially non-English speakers. Soojeong Han is on a journey to complete her Ph.D at the University of Washington through their Palliative Care Certificate Program. She is eager to put her knowledge and experience to work as a nurse educator and research scientist. She is particularly passionate about improving evidence-based practices in palliative care and advocating for policy changes. As a foreign student from Korea, Soojeong looks forward to playing a role in empowering diversity in the nursing profession. Her favorite quote is: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” Nazira Juneiyd?grew up in Kenya as a refuge where she observed firsthand the devastating effects of poverty on health. Her interest in healthcare began at the age of 10 while visiting family in the hospital. Inspired by the display of care and compassion given to patients, she decided that she too wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. Nazira is pursuing her DNP from Seattle University and looks forward to utilizing her passion for making healthcare accessible to all. She has a minor in Global Health, speaks four languages and volunteers as a medical interpreter.Karen Lowe is pursuing her Family Nurse Practitioner degree from Gonzaga University. She came to the U.S. from China at the age of 5 and witnessed her mother struggled to adapt. Karen feels fortunate that she can now help families like her own in areas such as community health, primary care, women’s health and serving adults with developmental disabilities. She volunteers with the King County Public Health Reserve Corps, the Seattle/King County Clinic and helped lead reproductive health classes at Shorewood High School and Shoreline Community College. This student wishes her name to be withheld for personal safety concerns. She is pursuing her Advance Practice Registered Nurse degree from the University of Washington. She is especially passionate about helping people suffering from mental illness, particularly those from minority groups where there are stigmas around searching out help. She is also dedicated to social justice and equity through global advocacy for human rights. She looks forward to inspiring and mentoring future nurses who come from other minority ethnicities through mentorships and preceptorships. Basic AwardPauline Galvez became inspired to become a nurse while caring for her grandmother. She is currently in the RN Program at Highline College. She has a keen interest in dermatology and educating people about the skin as a vital organ that protects the human body. She is fluent in both English and Tagalog.Farhia Hassan is in the BSN Program at Seattle University. The nurse who cared for in a hospital in a refugee camp in Kenya was her inspiration to become a nurse. She loves to empower women, girls and mothers by connecting them with available resources and demonstrating how education can be a pathway to their dreams. Currently she volunteers with the Somali Health Board and other local non-profits.Hang (Kristine) Le Dao is attending Seattle University in their BSN Program. Through her own struggles early in life, Kristine has built a strong desire to support the health and well-being of children and adolescents, especially those who have had adverse childhood experiences. She looks forward to helping shift the paradigm of childhood trauma so that every child can grow up feeling healthy and beautiful.Jalena Myers attends Seattle University in their BSN Program. She has been interested in a career in the medical field for as long as she can remember, but her passion was truly igniting while attending nursing camps where she got to see nurses in action. Jalena is always eager to learn new things, expand her perceptions and believes that nursing is so much more than just a job. For her, nursing carries with it the responsibility to not only care for patients, but it is also about educating patients, family and friends.Martha Ndungu is attending Seattle University, working towards her BSN degree. She grew up in small village in Kenya. When her beloved grandfather suffered a stroke and she witnessed the devastating results, her desire to become a nurse was born. Martha has a dual interest in pediatrics and community health and looks forward to promoting health and educating her patients about healthy lifestyles and ways to prevent illnesses. Sarah Paur is attending Shoreline Community College in their RN Program. She has always had an interest in medicine and helping others. After being a witness to accidents where people were critically injured, her desire to respond and help others in emergency situations came alive. Sarah brings with her a diverse background including a degree in Marine Biology, experience as an EMT as well as a volunteer fire fighter. She is passionate about critical care and is also eager to tackle the issue of bullying at work and helping others stand up for themselves.Esther Powers is attending Northwest University, working towards her BSN degree. She was called to nursing as a way to combine her desire to care for people with her interest in science, a kind of practical compassion as she calls it. Currently she has a special interest in diabetes care and removing the stigma around the disease that it caused by carelessness. She also volunteers with Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission on their Search and Rescue Team.Megan Wu is attending the BSN Program at Seattle University. She is dedicated to caring for vulnerable children and abuse victims and she would like to serve as a forensic nurse. Her passion for helping abuse victims came out of an experience in a hospital in Taiwan where she saw a woman and her child after they had been attacked in a domestic violence situation. She looks forward to becoming a nurse and not only giving back to her community, but also to travel as a nurse volunteer to areas in need of assistance. ................
