ASL Grammar: Time First!
Tense- time setting
-3 types: past, present, future
Conjugating Verbs- changing the form of a word to show tense
ex: have, has, had; jog, will jog, jogging, jogged; ran, run; be, being, been; is, am, are
IN ASL, VERBS ARE NOT CONJUGATED!
ex:
past: ME GO STORE.
present: ME GO STORE.
future: ME GO STORE.
TIME FIRST!!!!!!!!!!
What does “time first” mean?
It means that the sign indicating WHEN an event occurred or will occur is signed FIRST.
Examples of “time signs”
TODAY, NOW, YESTERDAY, TOMORROW, NEXT-WEEK, MONTH, PAST, FUTURE/WILL, MORNING, NOON, AFTERNOON, O’CLOCK+ (number)
ex:
past: YESTERDAY ME GO STORE.
present: TODAY/NOW ME GO STORE.
future: TOMORROW ME GO STORE.
