It is important that you read this]Patent Claims [The patent claims must define the matter for which you are applying for protection, in terms of the technical features of the invention. The claims must be supported by the description. Use general but specific terms. Use plain language. Try to generalize, in that way competitors are not able to easily design around your patent. Write each claim in one sentence. Describe the means, not the effect or what is achieved. It is important that you do not limit yourself to a narrow way to perform the invention. For example, do not use the word "screw" which is a limiting and narrow term, if the invention can be performed with other types of fasteners, such as rivets, nails, glue, soldering or the like. You should use numerical references to any drawings, in order to facilitate understanding for the reader. The first independent claim must state all the essential technical features of the invention. It defines the scope of the patent protection. The terms "includes", “contains”, “comprises” and "consisting of” are common words in the world of patents, but what do they mean and what is the difference really? The terms "includes", “contains” and “comprises” mean that what is mentioned in the claim is included, but that in addition there may be other technical features present in the invention. This is therefore a broader term and gives a broader scope of the claim. “Consists of” is a narrow term, and is interpreted as that which is explicitly mentioned in the claim. For example, if a claim for a chemical compound refers to it as "consisting of components A, B and C" by their proportions expressed in percentages, the presence of any additional component is excluded and therefore the percentages should add up to 100%.Independent claimsIndependent claims give the essential features– but nothing more – for performing the invention as intended.]For exampleDownhole tool, characterized by that it includes an antenna (84,94) (the new and inventive essential features of the invention follow here)….Dependent claimsOne or more dependent claims can be linked to an independent claim. Such claims indicate further essential features in addition to, and will work with, the essential features of the independent claim. Dependent claims may also define various alternatives of the invention].For exampleDownhole tool as defined in claim 1, (more details of the invention follow here)..3.4...Categories of claimsMultiple independent claims are allowed in different categories, but you should avoid having more than one independent claim in each category. For example, an independent claim 1 may be directed to a product, another independent claim to a method of making this product and a final independent claim for the use of this product] ................
