PATIENT SCENARIOS

Student Handout

All students should practice all components using the minimal lift equipment. Each rotation will last 40 minutes. Complete the exercises in the first room and then rotate to the remaining stations in the rooms as outlined below:

Room G700, Room 6, Room G200

Room G200, Room G700, Room 6

Assess patient and environment, determine which assistive devices are needed, how many caregivers are needed, and practice positioning with friction reducing devices and ambulation with handled gait belts.

Room G700

Scenario #1: Mrs. A arrived to your post-partum unit 4 hours ago. She had an epidural, which is slowly wearing off. She is cooperative and pleasant. She is resting in bed. She would like assistance to go to the restroom. She weighs 155 lbs.

Scenario #2: Mr. B recently had a stroke, with residual right-sided weakness. He did not have any cognitive effects, and he is cooperative. He has regained the ability to partially bear weight with quite a bit of assistance, but his right arm remains weak. You enter her room for your evening assessment and he is finishing his dinner in the chair. He no longer has an IV and his Foley was removed yesterday. He asks if you can assist him to the restroom.

Room 6

Scenario #1: Mr. C is on bedrest. He needs to be moved up in bed. He can assist and has lower extremity strength.

Scenario #2: Mrs. D is in the intensive care unit. She is unresponsive. She must be moved up in bed and turned every 2 hours.

Scenario #3: Mr. E has been in an MVA and has a spinal cord injury. He has a Miami J collar and is on strict bedrest with spine precautions. He has orders to be logrolled Q shift for back care. He weighs 195 lbs.

Scenario #4: Mrs. F has lung cancer and has been admitted for chemotherapy. She is scheduled for a CT scan this morning. She needs to be moved on to the stretcher to go down to the radiology department. She is confused and unable to move to the stretcher by herself or assist you. She weighs 275 lbs.

Room G200

Scenario #1: After a construction accident, Mr. G sustained a traumatic brain injury and many broken bones. He is fully dependent for mobility and toileting, and is receiving enteral feedings. He is conscious and cooperative, but has no upper or lower extremity strength. He has on order to be up to the chair TID.
