Configuring your z: drive (aka. network drive, home folder…) and USB device
We want the configuration of our user folder, Z: drive, (and our USB device configuration) to resemble this:
[pic]
Root folder---can’t go any higher in the configuration
Parent/Child folders
[pic]
Thus:
JMA260 child folders:
• Assignments
• Client
• InClass
• Practice
There will also be an index.htm file, which you will create, and save in the root folder (JMA260)
There will also be a pub folder on z: It’s a parent of jma260
We created the pub folder…do NOT delete it
Here we go: Configuring Network (Z:) Drive
Double click on your Z: drive (recall, Z: is actually a shortcut, to your user folder at CTS -- our computer department)
• See pub?
• On your Z: Drive, inside pub create a child folder named JMA260 . It’s our root folder, the top folder in our site
(Check…are you sure you are on your Z: Drive?)
• Inside your new JMA260 folder , create these child folders:
o Assignments
o Practice
o Client
o Images
[pic]
• Inside each (except Images) , create a child Images folder.
Here is a picture of a typical Z: directory structure:
o
• You will post (upload, put ) your homework into the Assignments site/folder,
• Client-related work (business cards, video, brochure…) will go into the Client folder,
• Web-related but non client, work we create (poster, logo,…)will go into Practice,
• As noted, you will eventually create and save an index.htm page inside your JMA260 root folder (on your network/user drive) with links to your various assignments.
• Your index page will render (display) to something like this:
[pic]
Configuring your USB Device
(No PUB Folder on USB Device)
Create a JMA260 folder on your USB Device
o Inside JMA260 , create five child folders:
▪ Practice
▪ Assignments
▪ Client
▪ Images
▪ InClass
• Inside each folder (except Images) create an Images folder
• It is quite similar to the structure of your user (Z:)folder.
o Difference: Absence of pub, inclusion of InClass
• Your USB device should now look something like this
[pic]
Inside InClass create these folders
• Dreamweaver
• Illustrator
• Photoshop
• Premiere
• Encore
• Images
Inside each create Images folders (NOT inside Images, however)
This folder will contain assets that we won’t put on our Z: …Perhaps lecture notes
Displaying Folder Options
• Open> C: Users>Your Name
• This is where your desktop apps are stored
There are several ways (8 actually) to show content of folders;
Specifying the default display ( Different with Windows 8.1 Window 10)
• Find the More Options tool . . . Dropdown near upper right of screen
[pic]
• Shows 8 or so different ways to display folder content:
[pic]
• Tiles useful if you have a lot of pictures on your computer…try it
• I personally like Details, probably not for you
o Go ahead and select the one that you like best
Choosing What to Show
Showing/hiding file extensions (i.e. what’s after the dot)
• MyAssignment.docx, for example
• Why is this important?
▪ Example: What program should be used to open a file with the name asgn7? No idea!
▪ The extension tells us (and the computer) what program created it
• Choose Organize menu option
[pic]
• Select Folder and search options
[pic]
• Select the View tab to reveal the default settings
[pic]
• Look at my above screen capture: Note the second checkbox from the bottom…the default is to NOT show extensions
• Choose to show file extensions(uncheck Hide extensions for known file types
• Be sure to NOT check Show hidden files and folders, and do not check to show protected operating system files… [pic]
Now, look at any folder’s content
Shows extensions!
Windows 8 and 10 use this ribbon: Click View to reveal
[pic]
Drive Letters/ Purposes
• D:drive = temporary storage, use for videos …BUT we may reformat the drive, someone can delete what you put there,…
• E:= DVD burner,
• F: =your USB device (May be a different drive letter on your computer)
• Your Z: drive should be visible in your Computer app as well (Double-click Computer) ; if not, wait 1-2 minutes and try again
o aka (also known as) network drive, user folder, home folder
o This is actually a folder that represents your own, private, user folder on one of our server computers in the computer center, CTS.
o You will see this Z: drive when you log in to Windows, and ONLY when you are in one of our two PC labs (205 and room 345). You won't have a Z: drive at home, or the Mac lab, so don't get too used to using it.
Note: Advanced concept: the Z: drive is really a shortcut to a folder: jma.duq.edu/users/YourLoginName
And jma.duq.edu is a computer (file server) at CTS
[pic]
o Use Z: ONLY to create folders for Dreamweaver (an application to create Web sites), and only when directed to do so.
o Don't ever refer to it as Z: in Dreamweaver (app to create web sites)
QUESTIONS?
Folder Purposes
• You will save your assignments in the Assignments folder. Save client-related content in the Client folder.
o The inClass folders hold non Web stuff,
• Your USB InClass folder should now look like this:
[pic]
My/Yours entire (USB) JMA260 folder:
[pic]
Practice: Transferring files and working with pdf (Portable Document Files)
Goals:
Moving files between your USB and Z: Drive,
Creating pdfs in Microsoft Word,
Start Word
Type “ This is a Word document, which I saved as a pdf”
Saving Word documents as pdfs;
o File>Save as> choose pdf from the list
[pic]
OR
File>Save As> pdf
OR
Or, File>Print>Adobe pdf >Print :
[pic]
Note: we have a color and a black and white laser printer in the labs…always select black/white unless told otherwise
• Save to your USB: JMA260/Practice as MyFirstPdf.pdf
Policiy Since this document will go on or Web site, NO SPACES in File names…or will see %20 for every space)
• Exit Word:
Moving files/folders between computers: Drag and Drop and FTP
To move files/folders to/from your Z drive around you can:
20 Drag and drop (Only works if you are in rooms 205 or 345)
21 or use File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Both methods are built in to Windows. You’ll need to download a program (Cyber Duck) for a Mac
Drag and Drop
• Open Practice folder on Z: and F:
• Drag and drop your MyFirstPdf file from your JMA260/Practice USB folder drive to your Z: JMA260/Practice folder
Can’t drag and drop from your room, must use File Transfer Protocol (FTP, which we discuss next)
Questions?
File Transfer Protocol (protocol=rules)
o Purpose: Put/Get files between two computers
▪ e.g.Your personal computer and jma.duq.edu, which is in CTS
o Often use FTP to open a folder on a remote computer, and then do a drag and drop to/from that remote folder and “put” our files (When we download , it’s called “Get”…to upload, use Put …will see again in Dreamweaver)
General FTP format
Where do you type this?
o CAN FTP using address bar of Internet Explorer: But, don’t do it…adds a layer of confusion
• Open a window (application) other than Internet Explorer
e.g. double-click the Computer icon on your desktop
[pic]
• Enter the URL you see below, but substitute your name for webtest-02
[pic]
• You will be asked to authenticate yourself
• Here is what you should see/type:
[pic]
• Enter your name and password
• Now you can Drag and drop files from your USB drive to your Z:/JMA260 , or vice versa. Example :
• Drag your pdf file from your Z drive folder( JMA260/Practice) folder to USB drive’s JMA260 / Practice folder
Mac users: Google Cyberduck and install it.
We will practice FTP’g again, don’t panic (yet!!)
Test:
jma.duq.edu/users/webtest260-01/pub/jma260/practice/myfirstPDF.pdf
