PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS RULES

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS RULES

Parents and Students,

Please read the following requirements the Physical Education Department expects from their students. After you have read them, PLEASE SIGN THE ATTACHED FORM AND RETURN IT TO THE APPROPRIATE TEACHER. A student who has not returned the signed form within two days will not be allowed to participate in P.E. For those students who have asthma you must bring your inhaler with you every day to class. The Instructor will hold on to your inhaler for you. Parents if you have any questions please call 488-4776.

• Students will also bring hoodies and sweat pants when directed by the teacher the following day if the outside temperature is not acceptable for shorts and t-shirts.

• THE CLOTHES A STUDENT WEARS TO SCHOOL ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE TO WEAR DURING GYM CLASS. STUDENTS WILL LOSE POINTS.

• CLOTHES THAT ARE WORN IN PE ARE TO BE CHANGED BEFORE GOING TO THE NEXT CLASS.

SHOES:

• Shoes must be athletic, running or court shoes with white or non-marking soles. Skater shoes are not recommended for P.E.

• Shoes must have shoelaces and be tied snuggly over the tongue. Not tying shoes appropriately creates a safety hazard. Velcro tied shoes are also okay for use in gym class.

• Slips on shoes are not allowed. (Keds, Nike, Sketchers or any canvas slip on style tennis shoe without a heel support or otherwise cannot be worn.)

• Shoes and socks must be worn at all times while in gym class.

A STUDENT IS CONSIDERED NOT TO BE DRESSED OUT IF:

• A student’s shoes are not appropriate gym shoes, have no laces and are not tied correctly.

• A student wears the same clothes in gym that are the same worn to school.

2. Rules for P.E. and locker rooms:

• Put downs, teasing or making fun of others will not be tolerated! This will result in an automatic detention to be served at lunch or after school. The student will also lose points for the day.

• There will be absolutely no horseplay of any type in the LOCKER ROOMS, GYMS, EQUIPMENT ROOM, OUTDOORS, WITH ANY OF THE EQUIPMENT OR ON ANY PE EQUIPMENT.

• CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF (BEFORE ENTERING LOCKER ROOM) AND SECURED IN GYM LOCAKERS AT ALL TIMES. No pictures are alolowed in locker room at any time!

• Keep all objects out of your mouth (I.E. gum, candy, and other choke hazards.)

• Once a student is in the gym, he/she will not be allowed to return to the locker room. (Students must use RESTROOMS IN THE HALLWAY)

3. Consequences for not following the rules:*****

• First and Second Offenses: The student will spend the first five minutes of his/her lunch with a teacher. It is the student’s responsibility to find the teacher with whom they owe time. Students must report to the appropriate teacher before going to lunch.

• Third Offense: The student will serve a 30 minute after school detention. All students given an after school detention will be given a 24 hour notice so they may inform their parents to arrange transportation. A phone call will also be placed by the teacher informing parents.

• After the third offense students will be sent to the office. HOWEVER, if a student’s behavior is creating a hazard, a potential hazard, or possibly could cause themselves or someone else injury, the class teacher may assign them after school detention or send them directly to the office without going through the consequential steps.

4. Late to class: A student is late to class if;****

• Students are not in the locker room and dressed out within 5 minutes of being released from their previous class.

• Students will be given an unexcused tardy if they are not in their correct spot for warm-ups and stretches while the teacher is taking attendance.

• Students who do not have an excused tardy slip will spend the first five minutes of their lunch with the appropriate teacher. Reoccurring incidence will result in a 30 minute after school detention.

******PLEASE NOTE RULES 3 AND 4 ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE********

5. Excused from participating in P.E.

PARENTS may excuse their student for three (3) consecutive days with a written note or a phone call to the appropriate teacher by the following gym class to be excused. Unless extenuating circumstances exist, a note received after three days will not be accepted. Students will lose points for those days.

A Doctor’s note is required on the fourth (4) day. The note needs to say how long a student is out for and when the student may again participate in physical activity. If a student is able to participate on a limited scale, the note should address the parameters in which he/she is able to participate. That applies to student’s who wish to participate that may have suffered an injury to a limb.

NO DOCTOR’S NOTE will result in the student losing 3 points per day that the student does not participate. If a doctor’s note is obtained, then the student will be awarded points back.

6. Gym Lockers:

• Students need to have a combination lock on their locker to protect their belongings. Your combination must be given to a P.E. teacher.

• Do Not Bring Keyed Locks.

• At the end of the semester grading period, you must take off your lock or it will be cut off.

• Sharing of lockers will not be allowed. People caught sharing will lose locker privileges. If you store your personal items in a friend’s locker, and they are absent from gym class, the P.E. teachers will not give out their combination.

• If you do not get a lock, then you must take your belongings with you at the end of the period. You will need to store your P.E. clothes in your hall locker.

• Any student with financial difficulty need to see a P.E. teacher for assistance.

• Cell phones must remain off and in gym lockers at all times!

• The Physical Education Department will not be responsible for Lost, Stolen or Damaged Articles.

7. Grades:

We will grade using a rubric on a daily basis. At the end of the each quarter points will be totaled and a percentage scale will be used. The following is a percentage point breakdown of our grading system.

• 90% and above of total points equals an A.

• 80-89% of the total points equal a B.

• 70-79% of the total points equal a C.

• 60-69% of the total points equal a D.

• 59% and below of the total points will equal a F.

8. Pedometers and Heart Rate Monitors:

The PE department is using pedometers in each class to monitor

activity levels of each student. NASPE (National Association for Sport and

Physical Education) guidelines suggest that students achieve a minimum

of 3,500 steps during their PE class. Students will be assigned pedometers

at the beginning of each semester. If students lose, purposely break,

destroy, or fail to return their pedometer at the end of the period they will

be fined $10.00, the cost of the pedometer. PE classes will also use heart

rate monitors. The heart rate monitors are strapless and measure heart

rate by placing the middle finger and index finger on sensors built into the

watch. The heart rate monitors will be turned in at the end of each

period. If students purposely break or destroy them, the student will be

fined $75.00. The PE department was fortunate to receive a grant for the

pedometers to be used as an assessment tool to monitor physical activity.
